Review: Barq's Red Creme Soda

When you think Barq's, you typically think about that root beer with a "bite". It's a root beer that contains caffeine, which is a little different. However, there are actually a couple other products in this product line that is owned by Coke. One of them is Barq's Red Creme Soda (which incidentally, is caffeine-free!)

Barq’s Red Creme Soda

I haven't seen this around too much in the Chicagoland area, though I know it's possible to obtain. I actually bought my bottle somewhere in South Carolina a few months ago. I don't think the age really mattered in this case. According to that illustrious bastion of knowledge, Wikipedia, "for decades, this was the only other product under the Barq's brand name, long known in New Orleans as Barq's Red Drink."

Well, yes… it is red.

This drink is actually very red. (Red 40, to be exact!) It has a very sweet scent. In fact, it smelled a lot like Jones Soda Cream Soda. Upon first drink… wow, was this stuff sweet! Of course, it also initially tasted like cough syrup. But when you got beyond that, you had this super sweet red syrupy drink in your mouth… followed by a super sweet red syrupy aftertaste. It still wasn't as sweet as Jones clear cream soda entry, however.

The drink itself isn't something very different from other beverages we've tasted. There is no Barq's "bite" here. It's sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. And it has an influx of bubble gum flavoring, sorta like Jones Blue Bubble Gum Soda. The packaging itself is rather boring as well.

I can't say I'm much of a fan of Barq's Red Creme Soda. You aren't missing anything if you not try it. Barq's should stick to root beer!

You should try Diet Barq's Red Creme Soda. It is absolutely awesome. I am addicted to it. Actually when I try to drink the regular kind it tastes funny. The diet kind has a softer, sweet flavor without as much bite to it. It also is one of the lower calorie diet drinks. It only has 5 calories per serving and still has no caffine. It is great for someone who loves soda, but wants a really good diet version. The sad part is the only place I seem to be able to get it is in Ohio. When I move to North Carolina I will have to have my family send me some every month because it is all I drink.

  2. Barqs red creme soda is great !! It's alot like the old red creme soda made by Fanta. To these taste buds it's alot better than Big Red ,which has an odd after taste. Red Barqs GOOD STUFF !

I love Diet Barq's Red Creme Soda. It is the only drink I buy where I do not look at the price, I just buy it whenever I see it.

Unfortunately, though I live just two hours north of Cincinnati, all of the local stores have stopped carrying it. I'm going to have to find a store with a supply and buy 10-20 cases to tide me over for a while.

  4. I recently rediscovered Barq's Red Creme Soda. I could not find a Big Red so I bought the Barq's. Wow! It's the best red creme soda that I have ever had. Unfortunately, it's not sold in my home town but I know where to get it when on the road. Try it. It's great.

So is Diet Barq's Red Creme still available somewhere? A few years(5-7) ago it was available in the Chicago area, but has been gone since then, but not forgotten. It would be worth a road trip to go get a case somewhere. Truly one of the best diet sodas ever to be made.

  6. i personally think that it doesnt taste like cough syrup!! i am actually drinking a can right now. im always stocked with this stuff!! yumm:) its hard to find where i live… its only avalible at one grocery store, sadly. and they rarely have any:(

I have found Diet Barq's Red Cream Soda at Krogers in Sidney, Ohio!

  9. Steve,
You are an idiot. Barq's Red Creme is the best soda ever invented. You should have told everyone up front that there are no tastebuds on your tongue….

  10. Barq's Red Creme Soda is the best, especially for us folks who live in Michigan who are familiar with Faygo Redpop and Faygo Cream Soda, it's like the perfect combination of these two classics. Unfortunately it can't be found in Michigan, but I buy it in Indiana whenever I go. My dad is visiting and just brought me seven 12-packs, weeeee!!!

  11. My local fuel stop, like most, sells a variety of fountain drinks. Among them is Fanta Red, which is a cream soda. However, I do not recall ever having seen it available in any grocery stores, even in past decades. Therefore, I set out on a quest to find where I might acquire some, as it is my favorite fountain drink.
My findings revealed that Fanta Red is still actively marketed in Canada and in one or two other countries abroad, but is not currently available in the United States. Additionally, after searching and cross-referencing a number of Coca-Cola associated websites who share the following claim, and performing my own taste-test, I now believe that Barq's Red Cream Soda and Fanta Red are indistinguishable tastewise and in appearance and, hence, one and the same. Considering that they are both Coke products, it is in my own opinion that Barq's Red Cream Soda is relabled Fanta Red to be marketed in the United States since Barq's has a more notable presence as a rootbear brand, and since most of the competition, such as A&W, also market one or more cream soda varieties. At any rate, I will be abandoning any further searches for Fanta Red and continue to buy Barq's Red in its stead and never miss a beat :^D

  12. Like they say, "Barq's has bite", But their Red Creme is THE BEST! Used to be able to get it in most every store in the KY, OH and IN area but it is getting harder to find now and when a store does get some, it is sold out the same day it is stocked on the shelves. When I get up in the area, I normally buy between 4-12 cases since they do not sell here in FL. Getting it shipped from LA cost about $25 a case. Even had one friend's daughter almost get in a fight with some woman over the last case on the shelf in Ohio 2 years ago. When I lived in NJ, I had 1 store that could have sold a 50 Trailer load a week.

  13. Desperately missing Diet BRCS. I'd even bust my diabetes routine for a 2L of the full strength if I could find it here in central Pa.

Regional bottlers can't be bothered with production switch overs, so it seems. I have to fight regularly just to obtain Coke Zero cases or 24oz 6-packs. They just do mad runs on Coke and Diet Coke 2Ls and cans like it's going out of style.

As far as drying up the area on select products just to command boutique prices, well screw that, too. They've made me go this long without it, I guess I'll just keep waiting until some sharp salesman actually cares about his customers and offers his company's full line of products.

  14. herbert reschke says:

No diet cream soda at Jewel or Dominecks in Niles or Skkokie. Why not? Please give me a location, where I can buy some

  15. I grew up on BRCS as a kid in Ohio and miss it a lot. West Coasters will have to get it from one of the distribution (not far enough west for me), I don't know about East Coasters, but hear reports of SC and LA.

  16. I first tried BRCS from a soda fountain at a pizza parlor here in the white mountains in Arizona. To my delight I actually found that Basha's grocery store here in Springerville carries 12-packs of it and I havnt ran out since. I LOVE the stuff! I couldnt believe when I read the review this guy at the top gave but im not suprised to see that no one has agreed with him and that we all love it :)

  17. Barg's Famous red creme soda is much better than big red. I tried the big red soda and it tasted flat. Barg's red creme soda is the best, im drinking a can right now. Its my favorite and only soda/pop that I will purchase. If you've never tried it you need to, if you like big red you would love this soda twice as much. This revue by who ever did it sucks, try it for yourself, this guy is crazy. I live in ohio and it is avaliable at a store here called Marc's in salem ohio, although they run out frequently being the only store who caries it around here.not sure if its in other states or not (Marc's that is) . They also have bottles of it at the walmart gas station in salem ohio. Its a coca cola product so if you speak to the store ask them to stock it, they may be able too. Hope this helps. you can order it online but they charge alot for shipping, but if you really want it thats another option, just type bargs red cream soda in your browser and look around. at local stores it under $10.00 for a 12 pack of cans.

  18. I just had this at Five Guys. I wouldn't drink it every day, it's a little too sweet, but once in a while it is great!

  19. I am at the Coca Cola Store in Las Vegas and I asked the lady working behind the counter if the Barqs Red Cream Soda was caffeine-free and she said No. Its important to me to know because I am in my first trimester of pregnancy and refuse to drink anything with caffeine in it. Thank you for posting this article to inform me that indeed it is caffeine-free.

  20. Garbage.

  21. I too was making sure this was caffeine free as my 11 year old doesn't tolerate caffeine well. Just bought this at our local JayC grocery store in Indiana. He loves it. Not too many drinks are caffeine free. Big Red is huge here, but it contains caffeine. Most people working at restaurants/diners/fast food restaurants/convienence stores haven't a clue about what is or isn't caffeine free. Don't ask them, do your own research.

  22. I was born and raised in Cincinnati Ohio. Barq's Red Cream Soda was always a special treat for us. We especially loved floats made with vanilla ice cream. I just recently visited Cincinnati and bought the last four 12 packs at Kroger to bring home to Florida with me. Also brought home some Frischs tartar sauce. Had homemade Big Boy's and red cream soda floats tonight and they were YUMMY!!!!

  23. Dot Rosenberg says:

Jut served Barq's to a friend and she gave up Pepsi for it. Have no trouble finding it on sale in Walmart southwest Idaho. Can;t get enough of it Yum! So happy to hear it has no caffine as it is 110 degrees and I keep my refrigerator stocked with it. I live in apartments and nobody worrys where to get it, they just come drink mine. Gotta try a float with it sounds good.

  24. This stuff is GREAT ! Whoever said it tastes a lot like the old Fanta Red Cream Soda from the 70's is absolutely correct ! — and imagine that, it's a Coke product. Coke brought back the orange and grape Fanta, but not the best which was the red cream soda….so this Barq's is the closest thing you'll get.
You can get it at most Wal-Mart stores – they don't keep a lot in stock – but the more you buy, the more they will order next time ! It will be in the Coke aisle.

  25. I grew up in Dayton, OH and Red Cream Soda has always been my favorite. I moved out to SoCal when I was 20 and have found it nearly impossible to find Red Cream Soda. Big Lots carries Dad's sometimes, and occasionally Ralph's will have BigK Red Cream, but Barq's seems nowhere to be found.

Side note: the reviewer is obviously retarded. Red Cream tastes nothing like cough syrup. Nor does it taste like bubblegum.

  26. I grew up on Barq's here in Northern Kentucky & their Cream Soda is the best! Yeah, I'd have to agree that the reviewer is retarded or he's just a paid professional liar. I don't believe that he even tasted it because there just ain't no bubble-gun or cough syrup flavor to it at all. Barq's Cream Soda makes for the perfect ice-cream float, just like Barq's Root Beer makes a super good ice-cream float. I used to enjoy Barq's Grape Soda too, but it was discontinued back when Coke took over. For me, no other Root Beer, Cream Soda, or Grape will do. It's got to be Barq's or I just won't drink it. Period!

  27. R.J.Garrett II says:

I have been a drinker of cream or creme soda for years, both "clear" & red. There is NO
comparison…red is the best & Barq's has NO equal. It isn't too sweet and the carbonated bite is a perfect compliment to the taste. If you can find it,(no prob here inCols, Oh.) it's well worth the effprt. Period.

  28. You can find the sugary version here in Utah fairly easily, but I've been looking for the diet version with no luck. I assumed it didn't exist until I found out OH gets it.

  29. We use barqs cream soda to poor over vanilla ice cream or chocolate depending on your preference. We love it!

  30. Barbara says:

You would think since Coke is based out of Atl Ga
We could get the product here. Just checked and wow amazon wants 8.50 plus 16.79 shipping wow
Come on coke get with it we like Barqs red cream soda!

  31. I would like to know if you can send me some of that red cream soda? I can not find it anywhere. Please that is the best soda in the world.

  32. It's always easy for people to complain, however I want you to know you guys ( and gals ) ROCK I love all your products mostly Red cream pop, ( soda for all you weirdos ) lol. thank you . Bob Mack.
