Review: Barq's Red Creme Soda

When you think Barq's, you typically think about that root beer with a "bite". It's a root beer that contains caffeine, which is a little different. However, there are actually a couple other products in this product line that is owned by Coke. One of them is Barq's Red Creme Soda (which incidentally, is caffeine-free!)
I haven't seen this around too much in the Chicagoland area, though I know it's possible to obtain. I actually bought my bottle somewhere in South Carolina a few months ago. I don't think the age really mattered in this case. According to that illustrious bastion of knowledge, Wikipedia, "for decades, this was the only other product under the Barq's brand name, long known in New Orleans as Barq's Red Drink."
Well, yes… it is red.
This drink is actually very red. (Red 40, to be exact!) It has a very sweet scent. In fact, it smelled a lot like Jones Soda Cream Soda. Upon first drink… wow, was this stuff sweet! Of course, it also initially tasted like cough syrup. But when you got beyond that, you had this super sweet red syrupy drink in your mouth… followed by a super sweet red syrupy aftertaste. It still wasn't as sweet as Jones clear cream soda entry, however.
The drink itself isn't something very different from other beverages we've tasted. There is now Barq's "bite" here. It's sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. And it has an influx of bubble gum flavoring, sorta like Jones Blue Bubble Gum Soda. The packaging itself is rather boring as well.
I can't say I'm much of a fan of Barq's Red Creme Soda. You aren't missing anything if you not try it. Barq's should stick to root beer!
You should try Diet Barq's Red Creme Soda. It is absolutely awesome. I am addicted to it. Actually when I try to drink the regular kind it tastes funny. The diet kind has a softer, sweet flavor without as much bite to it. It also is one of the lower calorie diet drinks. It only has 5 calories per serving and still has no caffine. It is great for someone who loves soda, but wants a really good diet version. The sad part is the only place I seem to be able to get it is in Ohio. When I move to North Carolina I will have to have my family send me some every month because it is all I drink.
Barqs red creme soda is great !! It's alot like the old red creme soda made by Fanta. To these taste buds it's alot better than Big Red ,which has an odd after taste. Red Barqs GOOD STUFF !
I love Diet Barq's Red Creme Soda. It is the only drink I buy where I do not look at the price, I just buy it whenever I see it.
Unfortunately, though I live just two hours north of Cincinnati, all of the local stores have stopped carrying it. I'm going to have to find a store with a supply and buy 10-20 cases to tide me over for a while.
I recently rediscovered Barq's Red Creme Soda. I could not find a Big Red so I bought the Barq's. Wow! It's the best red creme soda that I have ever had. Unfortunately, it's not sold in my home town but I know where to get it when on the road. Try it. It's great.
So is Diet Barq's Red Creme still available somewhere? A few years(5-7) ago it was available in the Chicago area, but has been gone since then, but not forgotten. It would be worth a road trip to go get a case somewhere. Truly one of the best diet sodas ever to be made.
i personally think that it doesnt taste like cough syrup!! i am actually drinking a can right now. im always stocked with this stuff!! yumm:) its hard to find where i live… its only avalible at one grocery store, sadly. and they rarely have any:(
