It looks like Pepsi is reviving its discontinued Pepsi Twist formula. You remember this lemon-flavored drink craze, right? Pepsi Twist debuted in 2000. Discontinued in 2006. Coke had their own lemon entry, Diet Coke with Lemon.
Apparently, the lemon-flavored Pepsi is returning, but only as part of a limited-time promotion with the National Football League. According to a story in Brandweek, Pepsi Lemon NFL Kickoff will hit the shelves in both regular and diet versions on August 11. It will last about 4 months and be heavily promoted as part of the “Pepsi Stuff” loyalty program promotion.
PepsiCo, as well as Coca-Cola, have shied away from full-time line extensions in favor of a less risky in-and-out strategy.
…The new entry, which will be available nationally in 20-oz., two-liter and 12-pack cans, will be supported by TV, print and online ads. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (who has been linked to pop singer Jessica Simpson) will make his third appearance in a Pepsi spot. Marketing will tout the product as “Pepsi with a kick of lemon.”
