It's not ugly, it's retro. Though one could argue that the two words are synonymous.
Seriously, though I love this concept design. What ended up as the retail release is nice and clean looking, but it's hardly a "throwback" except maybe the curvy Pepsi Logo they used. The new design stinks from a concept perspective, though it probably does appeal to the modern eye more.
