Throwback Thirds: Pepsi, Dew Throwback to return for 3rd run in August for 5 weeks
Jun 16th, 2010 by Steve
Good News! As of March 2011, both Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback are permanent additions to the Pepsi lineup!
The third time's a charm!
We've previously mentioned "whispers" via BevReview's Twitter account about the return of Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback in late summer/early fall for a third limited release.
Per Pepsi's customer support, this is now being officially confirmed:
We're thrilled to announce that thanks to the overwhelmingly positive feedback we've received, Throwback is coming back! You'll begin to see these beverages in stores starting July 31st for five weeks or while supplies last. They'll have the same real sugar formula and retro graphics that you liked so much the last go-round.
5 weeks? Seems like these runs are getting shorter and shorter, doesn't it. For those who like to mark their calendars, those dates are around July 31-September 4.
As we get more details, we'll be sure to share them. It's back for a third time, Throwback fans! Special thanks to BevReview fan Rick Powell for passing along the information.
As always, keep checking in here at BevReview for the latest Throwback developments. Keep up via RSS, Twitter, and Facebook.

5weeks! noooooooo! is this some kind of marketing scheme?
uhm, July 31 – August 4th is 5 DAYS. Just sayin'. SUPER STOKED they're coming back; my stock is about to run out from the last go-round. I'll be sure to stock up at the beginning of the on-sale time, rather than the end… Took me forever to find them towards the end last time!!
I believe you mean July 31st – September 4th.
Jennifer and Andy… good catch! September is correct
I'm still wondering if they're going to either make these permanently available or completely replace the HFCS Pepsi with the Throwback Pepsi.
And what I'm really waiting for is Coca-Cola to offer their own US distributed cane sugar cola!

Life would be much easier for me if Coke would get on the Throwback train. At home I have gone exclusively mexi-coke and when I cannot get that I pick up Jones, Boylans or Throwback when available.
Oh and I was hoping that the new Mello Yello reboot would throw some sugar our way, but alas.
Oh well. I will be sure to stock up on Pepsi Throwback though, usually get about 48 cans and 12 of the Dew with each release. Maybe i'll push it to 60 this time.
Hey Tony W, I live in PA and there is something here called Mexican Coke which is Coke made with real sugar. It is pretty much Coke throwback and it is being sold in the big glass bottles from way back when.
The Retroist — I bought something like 11 packs of the Pepsi and Mt Dew last time, I won't lie. I still have something like 2-3 of the packs left, at least. They definitely shouldn't even be gone by the time these hit, but I will still be stock piling as many as should last me til the expiration date (which, thank god, is way longer than those damn 2 liter passover Cokes!)!!
Please please please go back to the original Mountain Dew Throwback formula!
On another note, I bet they use those last two bottle designs that were shown originally. These ones:

There are still plenty of both in my area from the most RECENT return.
Dollar General stores in Northeast Wisconsin still have lots of Mountain Dew Throwback in stock from the 2nd edition. I just bought some the other night.
Yes my local Fry's is STILL stocking throwbacks…how will we know we have new stuff?? (As of June 22, 2010)
I have yet to see pepsi natural here sadly
i like the fact real sugar drinks are catching on vs mercury & high fructose corn syrup, do research yourself on that! (im not fibbing)
What can I say but "sweeeeeeeeeet"? When it does return, I'll be stocking up on it this time as well. I've still got six 12-pack cans each of the December Pepsi and Dew Throwbacks as well as eight 12-packs of Heritage Dr Pepper stocked in the basement that needs to be knocked off before I can drink the new stock, of course!
Back in March I went into one of the local Food lion stores searching for Heritage Dr Pepper and met up with a guy from Pepsi there. He told me then that Pepsi was contemplating bringing back the Throwbacks later this year, but he didn't know when.
I must agree with ThrowbackFan's comment. They need to bring back the Dew Throwback formula used in April 2009. That one more resembled the taste of the Dew I purchased from the Pepsi vending machine in the trailer park down the street from my house 30-plus years ago.
I wonder if the Heritage Dr Pepper will return as well? It ought to!
I bought 40-12 packs last go around. Have about 1/3 left, to give to family and friends. Everyone loves it. Thumbs up Pepsi.
Keep this up. I have my entire family addicted.
I can now stock up to get me thru the winter! YAY!
WHY only 5 weeks?????
Why not at least 8 weeks??The way it sells they should bring it back permanently or at least go from 8 to 12 weeks!!!
Love me some Pepsi Throwback!!!Will stock up!!!!
Pepsi says, "They'll have the same real sugar formula and retro graphics that you liked so much the last go-round." The "last go-round" wasn't as good as the first for Pepsi Throwback! Despite my pleas with them, it looks like they are going with Formula #2, instead of the original. Figures…these companies always know how to stop making a good thing.
honestly they need to just keep it i mean these other mountain dews like distortion and amp are a bunch of BS anyway they dont taste anything like moutain dew i mean damn if ill let them slide with code red cause it was amazing but guys stick to reguler diet throwback and code red thats the only drinks there company need all the rest are just bull crap and yes i am very exited of the return of this drink but only 5 weeks isnt enof it needs to stay forever because its the original!!!!!!!!
Pepsi, seriously, where are your heads?! This is EASY money, and replacing drinks laced with HFCS and putting this in its place instead would keep your goodwill, instead of constantly flushing it down the toilet.
The way these things sell, they could keep them forever and phase out HFCS and be one of the first beverage companies to phase out HFCS entirely, therefore setting the kind of example we need to see in the beverage industry right now more than ever.

I talked to a guy stocking Pepsi today (7-17-10) at our local Wal Mart. And he told me that Pepsi is thinking about making this permanent. But they will still make the HFCS Pepsi too. Dr. Pepper will also come out again with no HFCS. He also said he heard that Coca Cola will be coming out with a no HFCS Coke and Sprite.
I'm with Bob concerning his post above. I would love to see the Pepsi and Dew Throwbacks become a permanent part of the Pepsi product family. If not that, perhaps PepsiCo could bring the Throwbacks out every six months instead of nine, so I could continue to stock up on it. I drank an average of five to six cans a day of HFCS-sweetened sodas for twenty years up until late 2003 when I became sick with a blood sugar level of close to 500. My neighbor, who checked it for me, said it was a miracle that I didn't pass out. Since then, I've drank predominantly diet sodas, though I still drink an occasional HFCS soda. But since I started drinking these Throwbacks (and Heritage DP) along with the diets, I'm able to keep my body weight right around normal and even my vision has improved a little bit. I am convinced there IS a connection between HFCS and the growing problem with obesity and type-II diabetes in the United States. Pepsi would definitely be making the right move by keeping these Throwbacks permanent, even if a product like Pepsi One must be sacrificed to do it.
I quit drinking fountain drinks when out for dinner/lunch and only drink soda when I can read the label and get real sugar. If you look hard enough there are options out there.
Worst case if I cannot find a soda with real sugar I go without or drink water ( which is what I should do all the time ).
Jump on board and vote with your dollars. If enough people want a change it will happen. If people are lazy and take whatever is supplied then we will continue to get HFCS.

Yes my local Fry's is STILL stocking throwbacks…how will we know we have new stuff?? (As of June 22, 2010)
Hey now, don't go giving away the fact we still have a steady supply. If I go into Fry's tonight and see no more, I'll know who to hunt down. :p (now to go buy some more, just in case…)
Why don't they bring it back on a permanent basis and sell it in glass bottles? It is almost as if they don't want the money. During the last run, I knew people who would go to stores and buy all they had. Well, I guess there is always Mexican Coke on a steady basis, but that Pepsi Throwback sure does taste good!
Replace HFCS already! That stuff is pure crap.
Just got the last seven 12 packs at Stop and Shop on day 1. I hope they restock soon!
I, like some others here stocked up the last time due to a 5 for $8 deal on the 12 packs at the end of the last run. I just opened the first of the last three packs, and I'm glad that I will now have my Pepsi Throwback way into the upcoming semester of College, if not out the other side of it.
Thanks PepsiCo! (I still wish they'd bring back PepsiFree though[or call it that as it were])
@Tony, you can get cane suger Coca Cola at Costco (and some other stores). The Coca Cola from Mexico uses sugar over HFCS and is you can find it in a few places. They're in the glass bottles that say "refresco" on them. I know a few people mentioned it, but I just wanted to pass along how to find it.
I'm stoked that they're is a third batch, I have to finish off that 18-pack of Pepsi Throwback that I haven't had yet that is best by September 2010.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! We just ran out of Mt. Dew Throwback!!!!
I went out and got some Throwback today. They only had Mtn Dew, but I was surprised when I saw 2 liter bottles there. There were none of the cans of it, only the bottles which IIRC weren't there before. Regardless, I got me some more throwback
According to the Pepsi delivery guy at my local Speedway Gas Station Throwback is being made permanent to the Pepsi roster, if anyone can confirm this I would be much obliged.
I don't drink soda and don't serve it to my kids because of the hfcs and am thrilled that we can get soda sweetened with sugar. I hope this is a permanent change. I like having the option to have a sugar sweetened soda if I want to drink one. Thank you for thinking of those of us that don't want the hfcs.
Thank you for finally giving us a sugar sweetened soda. My kids and I don't drink soda because we don't like the hfcs. Thank you for offering those of us that don't want the hfcs the chance to have soda without haveing hfcs.
So glad to see a 3rd go-round for these. Last summer and winter the stock ran out very quickly here in the Binghamton, NY area. I despise the taste of diet drinks and HFCS-sweetened drinks, and during the two years I lived in California I could find Mexican everything. Pepsi, Coke, 7UP, even stuff like Squirt. The Throwbacks and the Dr Pepper Heritage rock and I am dying to see them offered on a permanent basis. It sure beats paying $20-30 a twelve-pack to get Mexican stuff off various websites- at Dollar General a twelve-pack is just $3.50 plus tax.
Throwback?
More like throw it back.
You think HFCS is bad, and real sugar is magically healthy?
Guess what, it's not. The HFCS people are right, it's really not that much different from sugar. They're nearly equally as BAD for you.
Water is plenty refreshing and you can get it free from your tap.
Stop making yourselves obese with sugarwater.
Throwback is so much better than reg. Pepsi. I still haven't found it yet in my area of NY. I am down to two cans from the last promo. I hope it is permanent.
Seriously, Kent Cowgill…get a life and stop telling people what they can and cannot drink. This is not the place for that, it is for people who get a lot of enjoyment out of a beverage for one moment of the day in their otherwise stressful lives. Please….go elsewhere
Amen, Brian! I wonder if Mr. Cowgill drinks nothing but water every day?
I made an experiment with Pepsi TB….I took a glass Boylan's Orange soda bottle, drank the orange soda which was excellent. then rinsed it out and stuck it in the freezer. I then took a can of Pepsi TB and funneled it into the Boylan bottle. It tasted even better than it usually does, the bottle being the best delivery system for the soda. The only problem was I lost significant carbonation during the transfer, which Pepsi TB already has less of than HFC Pepsi.
Kent Cowgill, settle down. It's called throwback, because this is how it used to be made back in the old days before they knew how to make HFCS. Bottom line is, all companies use HFCS vs SUGAR because it's cheaper! Companies are about Profit, and that's it.
Yes you can die from too much water intake, that's a fact!
Anything can be bad for you if you consume too much. Even water
But I do love the flavor of Throwback vs the current Pepsi. I hope someday they can just add throwback to their lineup. I think Pepsi can afford to spend a little extra to keep Throwback around all year.
Just got a reply from Pepsi consumer relations rep…. They have NO current plans to extend the availability of these products beyond a limited time….. But will forward my comments to the appropriate individuals.
So if you want it to stay, I guess people who like it need to start contacting Pepsi.
Why doesn't Pepsi get a clue…Look at the demand, the other day I almost had to fight a lady for the last 4 12 packs at the store….I was able to snag 3 of the Dr Pepper Heritage Anniversary additions. Wish Pepsi was a permenant deal on the shelf!! Sigh…Hey Pepsi, are you reading????
I hate soda. I never really knew why, but I just can't drink it without feeling sick. The only exception was when I was a little kid at Disnet Epcot. I drank imported Soda from Japan which used real sugar and fruit juices and was all natural. It was wonderful! I long wondered why it tasted good while soda usually tastes so bad… well, when I saw Mountain Dew throwback I though "huh. real sugar?" so I bought some and.. well.. I drank it all like water. It was amazing how good it was! I went to get more and they were all out. Then I saw "Sierra Mist Natural" and I bought some, which I am drinking now. Not as good, but it doesn't taste bad like normal soda. Now I know why I hate soda: t's the High Fructose Corn Syrope. Though, the diet junk is even worse, so maybe it is more than that… well… anyway, they won't have me as a customer when they don't carry soda like this. So I hope they get a clue and make this permanent.
So glad to find so many other hard-core Pepsi Throwback fanatics such as myself!
Just wondering when this current (Summer 2010) promotion is supposed to end? Most of the stores around here, if they stocked Pepsi TB at all, are now out of it and have been for two or three weeks. But this one shop near my house still has a pallet full! So I'm stocking up! Looked like they still had about 20 or 30 12-packs. I'm up to "stocking" six cartons – does that make me insane?
I just really like this stuff – not just for the sweetness, but it just tastes better than that "chemical haze" that permeates all HFCS-based products. Real sugar and corn syrup are "the same"?? Yeah, right. HFCS is just another man-made excuse for a real substance, and I just doubt whether it is as safe as real sugar. Don't let HFCS makers fool you when they try to change the name to "corn SUGAR" which they have applied to do. It's still not real sugar. Don't believe it? Go find an ear of corn. Now, try to get some sweetness out of it. You have to do some heavy-dute PROCESSING to get sugar from corn, and that's the problem (with a lot of stuff in America these days). Soda makers use it because it's CHEAPER and more profitable, end of story. Real sugar IS better for your, and I like it better.
Better run down to….. ooops! Almost spilled the name of the store still stocking TB! And it's almost October! Gotta pick up a few last cartons!
I love throwback! What is Pepsi thinking by only having it for a limited time? We were told that if it sells good then they will consider bringing it back permanently. Everyone is clearly buying it because the shelves empty fast. I say keep it coming, it tastes better.
It appears that the Throwbacks may be around a little longer if this Associated Press story means anything….
http://www.fool.com/news/associated-press/2010/10/07/pepsi-mountain-dew-throwback-return-to-shelves.aspx
If it's so, then, to quote the late Great One, Jackie Gleason, "HOW SWEET IT IS"!!
On another line of soda from Pepsi, have you guys tried the Sierra Mist Natural! Wow, talk about good flavor, it's almost like drinking fresh-squeezed lemonade. Way better then 7-up. I bought a couple cases of this stuff. Now my question is. When will pepsi stop making it like all the other good ones they come out with. I hope it will be a permanent line.
I found out that Sierra Mist Natural is here to stay! It has replaced Sierra Mist.
:)
Apparently, the Pepsi and Dew Throwbacks are here to stay as well! I was in the Kernersville, NC (near Winston-Salem) Walmart yesterday morning and found several 12-packs of Pepsi Throwback that had a Sept. 25 2011 expiration date printed on them. Apparently they were manufactured only a few days ago. But the big thing about these 12-packs was what was NOT printed on the package……the words "Limited Time Only"! So that's one of two great Christmas presents for me this year. The other is that the Piedmont Triad is going to get its first real white Christmas in over forty years (two to three inches, at least).
Looks like Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback are here to stay. I found both in 12 packs, 2 litres, and single serve 20oz bottles in the Detroit area today. They do not say "Limited time only" on them any more. The packaging is for the most part the same but they have added a box with the total calorie count in addition to the standard nutritional facts area.
[...] this time around, things may be a little different. Take a look at the packaging from the 3rd Wave of Throwbacks (Summer/Fall 2010) when compared to this 4th Wave (Winter 2011). Here is the Pepsi [...]
It is almost February of oh'eleven and Throw back can be found everywhere. All have expiration dates many months from now and all are missing the "limited time only" label.
I am hoping it is really permanent this time.
I am also looking forward to a natural sugar Coke product, I am sure they won't let PepsiCo get all the glory
Mexican Coke has cane sugar in it but it is very expensive.
