Continuing our journey down the “Mother Road” of beverages, which has included Route 66 Orange Soda and Route 66 Lime Soda, we take a turn an explore the bypass known as Route 66 Black Cherry Soda. But enough of the roadtrip metaphors, let’s get to the review!
Like its siblings, Black Cherry arrives in a clear 12 oz glass bottle with the “Route 66 Sodas” logo anchoring the front, along with the tag of “Real Cane Sugar.” The drink itself is transparent red and somewhat dark, similar to Cherry Crush or a shade darker than Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash.
Like others in the Route 66 series, short stories are found on the back that highlight tourist attractions on the road. Black Cherry shines a light on the cabins and motor courts found along the way:
Cabins, Motor Courts & Motels
A number of “Mom & Pop” locations still remain along Route 66, known affectionately as the “Mother Road” and for its characteristic road signs and attractions. During the 1920-1960′s, highway advertising reflected love American style with clean rooms, reasonable rates, and romantic names like Wishing Well, Flamingo, and Coral Court. Most were owned and operated by individual families.
When you pop the cap off this bottle, you are greeted by a strong cherry scent, maybe with a slight hint of creaminess. Then you take your first sip and are complimented by a taste version of that cherry, which comes on quite bold to start. The flavor tapers off a bit as it works its way to the back of your throat, dissolving into something less appealing, more akin to a medicinal experience. The aftertaste, however, resolves with a clean and crisp ending, hinting at the creaminess in the overall flavor profile. It’s not bad. It’s not amazing. It makes do as an adequate black cherry flavor, inferior to products such as Boylan Bottleworks Black Cherry, and could be substantially bolder and longer lasting.
