Guest reviewer, tea & coffee enthusiast, and kids/families beverage guru Mark Smithivas returns with another review
I’m a big fan of the entire line of Honest Tea beverages, especially their organic line in PETE bottles. But honestly, Honest Tea Organic Passion Fruit Green Tea with Maqui Berry, with its bright pink label supporting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, falls way short of the mark.
First, let me be honest, from a marketing perspective I’m tired of seeing all the pink-ribboned products on my supermarket shelves. It usually means “targeted at women consumers” who will buy it just because it’s pink.
This bottle features a pink cap, pink banding on the top and bottle of the label, a pink ribbon situated below the name, and even the drink itself has a pinkish hue. The back of the bottle denotes that “at Honest Tea, we are just a passionate about our ingredients as we are about the causes we support. In 2010, we are donating $100,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help in the fight against breast cancer.”
Upon opening it, you are greeted with a slight tea scent, overpowered by a sweet berry aroma. It’s very un-tea like.
What about the taste? Well, for the first time in a very long while, I could not bring myself to finish more than a few sips. It was that gag-worthy. The main culprit? Stevia. Yes, this concoction uses stevia, the natural herb sweetener which is gaining popularity as an alternative to artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.
Stevia allows this drink to have zero calories, which is called out in large font on the front face of the label. And of course, with a pink bottle, it better be zero calories, right? I’ve yet to taste a stevia-flavored soft drink which tasted right. This drink tastes like the bottom fourth of a glass of generic fruit soda with ice that someone let sit out all day. Add to that the chalky, bitter essence of stevia, and well, end of story.
The full description of this particular beverage is “Organic Passion Fruit Green Tea with Maqui Berry”. Let’s be honest, who really has any idea what maqui berry is, much less what it tastes like? As far as the green tea, that flavor is virtually non-existent. I think Honest Tea tried to get too fancy here, and the resultant taste clash between green tea, exotic fruits, and stevia just doesn’t work at all.
But, it’s zero calories!
