Review: Pop Goes the Bubble Soda
Apr 21st, 2011 by Steve
A friend of mine went to a retro gaming convention and picked up this bottle of Pop Goes the Bubble for me to review. Sure, why not? Who doesn't want a bubble gum-flavored soft drink, right?
Brought to you by the folks at Real Soda, Pop Goes the Bubble comes in a uniquely-shaped 12 oz. glass bottle. The black label features a bubble motif with a retro font spelling out the brand. The drink is described as an "Old Fashioned Bubble Gum Soda."
The drink itself is pink in color, and once you pop the bottle cap, you are greeted with an obvious bubble gum scent. Anyone remember PAL Bubble Gum? Or even Bazooka? Think that type of smell.
Surprisingly, this stuff tastes very good! I mean, you have to expect that you are in for a gum-like experience. I was expecting something on par with Jones Blue Bubble Gum Soda, which was very gum-like. But the flavor of Pop Goes the Bubble is slightly more subdued, and is aided with a clean palette provided by the use of cane sugar.
The drink starts out much like a cherry or fruit-flavored pop soft drink, but then the slightly acidic element of gum flavoring kicks in. That flavor sticks with you a bit during the aftertaste, but it's not negative. I actually found it somewhat refreshing and distinctive. It's a novelty soda, but does a great job of living up to its name. It's a gum soda!
