Oh Shmi.

You had such potential as a good motivation for Anakin to go all crazy in Episode 1. What you gave us was… well, I’m still not sure what you gave us. We are sure of one thing, however. We got a Diet Pepsi can with the label #19 Shmi Skywalker on it! The one featured today here on BevReview is slightly damaged, but you get the idea.

During the 1999 Pepsi/Star Wars promotion, there were 4 different Diet Pepsi cans represented (not including bonus versions). We’ve already taken a look at the first two, #17 Queen Amidala and #18 Padme. We finally move away from Diet Pepsi cans that feature Natalie Portman, but we stay with that female theme apparently.

Here’s the official bio on this can:

Shmi Skywalker

Enslaved on Tatoonie, Shmi helps her son Anakin follow his destiny, even though she may never see him again.

The secret word found on the can was Is.

Like the other Diet Pepsi cans in this series, the background color is white, with the image of the character superimposed in black/white. Combined with the logo, you have a very patriotic looking red/white/blue color scheme. Over the years my can was exposed to some leaking syrup from other can, which prompted the transfer of some color and degradation of the artwork. Let this be a lesson to everyone… make sure you drain your cans first before storing them for long periods of time. Tapping a hole in the bottle is easy!

“What does your heart tell you? Probably to drink Diet Pepsi!”
