Review: Big Pineapple

So right off the bat I must admit… I’m not a huge fan of pineapple. (Uh oh, beverage review reveals bias; film at 11!) Thus, I was a bit tentative when taking a look at Big Pineapple, from the same folks that brought us Big Red and Big Blue. Thankfully, my preconceived notions were incorrect.

Big Pineapple

Like other similarly-named products from Big Red, Big Pineapple sticks with a simple description and labeling convention, its yellow-liquidness arriving in a yellow/orange-colored label, complete with a pineapple icon.

Interestingly, once you open the contain, you aren’t overwhelmed with fake pineapple scent, as you would with something like Fanta Pineapple. The smell instead is more like a tropical punch, which would seem appropriate if this soda was colored red.

Upon initial sippage (is that a word?), the flavor is subtle, but eventually kicks in with that bittersweet pineapple flavor you expect. However, it’s not harsh, but rather smooth. The flavor remains through the aftertaste, and is somewhat syrupy and fake, but overall, somewhat pleasant. Sure, this stuff has high fructose corn syrup in it, as as a beverage enthusiast, that’s not really something we love. Then again, Pineapple Sode from The Pop Shoppe also featured HFCS and tastes pretty awesome!

That said, Big Pineapple is a soft drink I’d totally drink again… and this coming from someone who isn’t a fan of the fruit itself! The smooth flavor doesn’t overwhelm and provides a unique taste not often found on store shelves.
