Phantom Phridays showcase PepsiCo cans featured in the 1999 promotion of Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace is returning to theaters, with George Lucas taking his one-dimensional film and converting it to 3D. To celebrate, we once again pay a visit to Jar Jar Binks, previously featured on can #10.

This time around, however, Jar Jar adorns a special, unnumbered can that was part of the same series. Along with Qui-Gon Jinn (previously featured on can #3), both represented a Pepsi brand that was being test marketed at the time, Storm. This was a lemon-lime beverage that pre-dated the release of Sierra Mist, but uniquely contained caffeine. When was the last time you drank a caffeinated lemon-lime?

Here’s the official bio on this can:

Jar Jar Binks

An outcast from his society, this naive Gungan’s curiosity and roving tongue get him into constant trouble and lead him into many misadventures

Unlike the other cans in this series from The Phantom Menace, there was no secret word found on the Storm cans.

The design of Storm was primarily dark blue, with a yellow/green “burst” like a hurricane surrounding the “O” in the product’s name. The way the “O” is portrayed cleverly uses negative space. Like the #3 Jar Jar Binks can, the Star Wars character is portrayed in black/white over the can’s background color. As noted, the nameplate that denotes this as a “Collector Can” does not contain a series number like the rest of the promotional line.

I think I’ll miss this can more for the Storm that was inside rather than the use of Jar Jar Binks on the exterior!

“Ooh mooey mooey, I love you Storm!”
