Review: 2003 Cott Beverages Canada “The Simpsons” Cans

Mike Burns, Co-Founder of CanMuseum.com, goes “Cowabunga, dude!” with this review on Canadian beverage cans

The Simpsons aired their 500th episode last month and they have come a long way from their humble beginnings as animated one minute shorts during The Tracy Ullman Show in 1987. It is the longest-running prime time animated series and longest-running sitcom in the United States. The Simpsons even have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It is a show based on an average middle-class American family with a twist of satirical comedy.

In 2003, Cott Beverages in Canada put out a four can set featuring The Simpsons. The only character missing from the cans is the mom, Marge Simpson. As this is disappointing, we do see the rest of the Simpson family in this set. The design layout of the cans is similar across the set with the exception of different bright colors on each can – other than root beer. The Simpsons logo and character(s) names appear at the top and all have 3 sides: English, French, and Nutrition Facts/Ingredients.

The first can is Mmm… Cola featuring the dad, Homer. The can is red with Homer in a typically dazed look drinking from a red soda can through a very twisted straw.

On the French side, we see that Mmm… Cola translates to Mmm… Cola.

2003 Cott Beverages Canada "The Simpsons" Cans - Lisa

The second can is a light green color with the sister, Lisa. On it she is holding a basket of lemons and limes in one hand, while in the other she is holding a fruit that combines the two – kind of like the Sprite “lymon”.

This flavor – if you haven’t guessed it already – is Magnificent! Lemon Lime Soda. Translated in French it is Super! Soda Citron Lime.

2003 Cott Beverages Canada "The Simpsons" Cans - Maggie

The third can which is orange in color is Ahh… Yes! Orange Cream Soda.

This can is slightly different in that it shows Homer (again) with Maggie, the baby, sitting on his head with one half of a dripping orange. In French, this flavor is Ouais! Soda Crèmeux À L’Orange.

2003 Cott Beverages Canada "The Simpsons" Cans - Bart

The fourth can is brown with the infamous trouble-maker, Bart, the brother of the family. On it, Bart is holding a frothy mug of root beer, with a moustache from the froth. It looks as though he is twirling the moustache between his fingers. This flavor is Ay Carumba! Root Beer or Ay Carumba! Racinette in French. “Ay Carumba” is one of Bart’s most famous lines in the series.

There are many other The Simpsons can sets that have been released over the years, but I chose this one because there is so little information about it that can be found on the web. My only complaint is that Marge is missing. A fifth Marge can would have made this set feel more complete. That said, I don’t recall ever seeing a Marge can in any other The Simpsons set. The likeness of the characters to the real ones in the series is spot on, as they should be, especially with creator, Matt Groening’s signature on them. With that and “25% Less Sugar*”… “*Compared to Regular Soda”, you can’t go wrong!
