Ghostbusters is a comedy released in 1984 starring acting greats such as Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis. It is a story of three scientists (Peter, Ray, and Egon) in New York City who specialize in parapsychology and start a business to catch ghosts. The American Film Institute ranks it 28th of the top 100 comedies of all time. It has spun off into a sequel and an animated series, not to mention countless toys, Halloween costumes, and other merchandise including an energy drink in 2009 commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the film.
Our friends at the Boston America Corp. have released many pop culture energy drinks over the years and all that I have seen have been designed very well — as you will see in future can reviews. The designs are typically shrink-wrapped plastic on the can. I can only assume that using this method allows them to use the same energy drink base for multiple products, giving them the opportunity to inexpensively rebrand based on different labels. As a can collector, that works for me.
Ghostbusters Ectoplasm Energy Drink shows the world-famous Ghostbusters logo on the front with the original three Ghostbusters (Peter, Ray, and Egon) in a silhouettes standing in front of it. The color scheme is black and a glowing lime-green ecotplasmy color. Ectoplasm is defined as the spiritual energy associated with the formation of spirits. In Ghostbusters, it is the slime left behind by ghosts.
The only other notable design feature on the can is the small Ghostbusters logo on the back on the can. Here, the ghost is holding up two fingers on its right hand and five on its left. Around this logo, it reads, “Twenty Five Years of Paranormal Activity.”
This is another favorite can of mine because I love this film! We’ll be taking a look at more pop culture energy drinks in the near future, so stay tuned.
