Review: Jarritos Light Tamarind

After recently tasting Jarritos Light Mandarin, we shift our gaze to the company’s other sugar free flavor, Jarritos Light Tamarind. The “Light” line was rolled out in 2011, utilizing sucralose and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) as artificial sweeteners.

Tamarind is one of Jarritos more popular flavors, probably because it’s quite unique. You tend to find it used in aquas frescos drinks, such as we’ve previously reviewed with Coba and Nestle Aguas Frescas. With a unique combination of sweetness and sour, plus some attributes that taste like tea, it’s often called upon because it doesn’t have an overpowering flavor, but often refreshes.

Bottle design is the same as other Jarritos products, with Light Tamarind being available in 12.5 oz glass bottles, as well as 1.5 L plastic sizes. The Jarritos logo features a large callout for “Light” underneath. Our glass bottle features the textured word “Jarritos” at the bottom of the neck, with a pattern continuing up. The label is a clear sticker affixed to the front and back of the bottle.

Light Tamarind is sort of a brownish, orange color. The scent is sweet, with hints of black tea.

As for the flavor, well, it’s not good. It starts out rather well, with a sweet organic flavor. However, the artificial sweeteners kick in right away, and combined with tamarind’s existing bitterness, it’s a double-punch of yuck.

In what could best be described as a plasticy taste that just sits on your tongue for quite a while, this drink lacks the appeal of the full-calorie version of Jarritos Tamarind. We felt that Light Mandarin was rather chemical tasting as well, so we’re thinking that Jarritos has some work to do in the sugar free flavor department before deploying more in the “Light” lineup. Not recommended at all.
