While Dr Pepper is spending the summer promoting The Avengers on its cans, what’s the rest of the Dr Pepper Snapple Group product line up to? It turns out the “Core 5″ brands are promoting the 20th anniversary of the first Olympic “Dream Team” — the first time NBA professionals represented the United States in basketball during the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona (which, incidentally, was also the last time both the Winter and Summer Olympics were held in the year.)
From a licensing move, this is a pretty creative solution to tie into the hype of the year’s Summer Olympics in London without actually being an official Olympic sponsor (that is reserved for Coke worldwide deal with the International Olympic Committee).
This 5 can set features Magic Johnson (Sunkist), Larry Bird (7Up), Patrick Ewing (A&W), Scottie Pippen (Sun Drop), and David Robinson (Canada Dry). Curiously absent is Michael Jordan, but no doubt the cost of using his likeness was prohibitive for this promotion.
Dr Pepper Snapple Group has long promoted their “Core 4″ brands as Sunkist, 7Up, A&W, and Canada Dry. However, since Sun Drop was taken national and recently moved into the #2 citrus spot (behind Mountain Dew), we’re finding it grouped more often with the other drinks, forming a “Core 5″ of flavor brands for DPSG.
It’s a busy summer for can collectors, that’s for sure!
