Review: Capri Sun Big Pouch – Fruit Punch, Strawberry Kiwi, & Maui Cooler

This current iteration of Capri Sun Big Pouch is the first time Capri Sun has actually made any sense to me. Larger size, built in straw, resealable cap. All winning ideas. So let's see what these 3 limited time flavors have to offer.

I mean, seriously, who thought it was a good idea to give kids pouches of juice that require them to be stabbed with weak plastic straws, only to basically spill all over themselves?

Answer: Germany.

Deutsche SiSi-Werke Betriebs GmbH, a division of Rudolf Wild GmbH & Co. KG, has been selling Capri Sun since 1969 (originally named Capri Sonne). The drink has been licensed for sale in North America since 1981, with Kraft Foods being the current licensee.

Capri Sun has experimented with a pouch larger than their 6.75 oz standard size before. In fact, it was even called the Capri Sun Big Pouch, featuring 11.25 oz of beverage in a larger foil package that you still had to stab with a straw. This was eventually phased out in 2006.

As we've previously reported, this new Capri Sun Big Pouch is going to be available "for a limited time" in 3 flavors, Fruit Punch, Strawberry Kiwi, and Maui Cooler . The larger size is 11.2 oz, and unlike other Capri Sun products, ditches the traditional straw in favor of a resealable cap. Gee, what an idea! The package shape also moves away from a traditional pouch look into more of an arrowhead design, with each flavor featuring some sort of extreme sport on the labeling.

Capri Sun Big Pouch Fruit Punch

The first flavor we tried was Capri Sun Big Pouch Fruit Punch, which features red highlighting on the package. It's a mostly clear liquid, with a slight pink hue. This Fruit Punch is just like what you'd normally find in a Capri Sun Fruit Punch pouch, just in more volume. It smells like candy, is light on the tongue, but super sweet and syrupy, with a fruity flavor (note the orange and pineapple in the ingredients). The packaging claims that it contains "10% juice" inside its "flavored juice drink blend."

Capri Sun Big Pouch Strawberry Kiwi

Moving on to Capri Sun Big Pouch Strawberry Kiwi, which is accented with the color yellow on the packaging. This beverage is a cloudy, clear-yellow color. The scent isn't really strawberry or kiwi. It's more like a really sweet powder or syrup that should be added to water to create a real drink. But alas, that's actually what it smells like. As for the taste, it's probably stronger on the kiwi side of things, with a slightly weaker strawberry flavor. It's not bad, and as with the Fruit Punch, the same flavor you'd get with the standard packaging size.

Capri Sun Big Pouch Maui Cooler

The final flavor in this trio of oversized pouches is Capri Sun Big Pouch Maui Cooler, accented with light blue on the label. Unlike the other two flavors we've reviewed, Maui Cooler doesn't appear to have a regular counterpart in the original Capri Sun lineup, meaning it's unique to the Big Pouches. In appearance, Maui Cooler looks a lot like Fruit Punch, with a light pinkish hue in a cloudy liquid. The scent is also in the same ballpark, to be honest. When it comes to taste, I'm leaning towards saying that it tastes a lot like a subdued Fruit Punch, not as sweet, but a bit more citrus infused.

Overall, if you are familiar with the Capri Sun brand, from a flavor perspective, there's nothing too surprising here. You basically are getting the same really sweet drink flavors that kids love. The real story here is the packaging. I'm completely impressed with the twist off cap and the resealability of these products. Once you remove the cap, a built-in nozzle roughly 0.5 inches long serves as your straw. Very practical, very clean, very easy to use. No mess! Obviously, an innovation like this is more expensive to produce, but I wouldn't mind seeing this on other Capri Sun products.

That said, I'm just wondering why the release of the Big Pouch series now, when so much of the beverage industry is under fire because of larger portions and making kids obese. A lawsuit filed in 2007 pretty much summed up the product line as "water, high-fructose corn syrup, and small amounts of juice." Larger portions with a resealable nozzle won't really curtail that criticism, especially when they defend the use of HFCS on their website via direct quotes from our favorite lobbyist group, the Corn Refiners Association. That said, the brand could always point critics to their low calorie Roarin' Waters or 100% Juice options.

Overall, we love the packaging on these Capri Sun Big Pouches. If you "Respect the Pouch," check them out before they disappear.
