Review: Boylan’s Creamy Red Birch Beer

We recently gave a favorable review to Boylan’s Original Birch Beer, noting its minty flavor and pleasant bite. It’s time to look at the kinder, gentler sibling of this flavor, Boylan’s Creamy Red Birch Beer.

Boylan’s Creamy Red Birch Beer

On their own website, Boylan’s notes that this is ” a perfect ‘entry level’ birch beer with more mass appeal,” which is quite true. They took their base Birch Beer, added some red coloring and vanilla, and created a smoother experience that is far more creamy in texture.

Like other Boylan products, this drink comes in a 12 oz glass bottle with printed label. The branding uses an attractive combination of tan and red colors to create a retro, yet modern feel. It’s a dark beverage, with a slightly red hue, much like a black cherry soft drink.

Upon removing the bottlecap, you are greeted with a pleasant root beer scent with a hint of cream. This translates into the drink itself, which — as proclaimed — is much smoother than the flagship Boylan’s Birch Beer. It’s not harsh, though it starts out like a traditional root beer. Then the creamy flavor kicks in to round out the texture. Not only does this make the drink excellent as a stand-alone treat, but it also compliments food quite well because of the diversified flavor base.

In many ways, this drink is the polar opposite of Boylan’s Original Birch Beer. It may not be as “harsh” as that drink, but the creamy texture definitely makes it more appealing to a general audience. If you are seeking something different, yet familiar, cane sugar-sweetened Boylan’s Creamy Red Birch Beer is the way to go.
