To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Arizona Beverages hosted a contest to come up with a new limited edition flavor, complete with a unique name and design. The result is Arizona Cherry Lime Rickey, available exclusively at 7-Eleven.
A “Rickey” is generally considered a base alcoholic spirit, combined with lime and carbonated water. Arizona’s version is a light, non-alcoholic carbonated beverage that has a nice cherry flavor start, followed by a lime finish. It reminded me a lot of Hansen’s Strawberry Kiwi in overall structure (or maybe a bit like the limited time Sierra Mist Strawberry Kiwi Splash), but with cherry replacing the strawberry flavor.
The drink is red/pink in color – and translucent, with a notable cherry scent. It’s light and bubbly, with a high level of sweetness, derived from high fructose corn syrup, with a tiny addition of sucralose and Ace-K (acesulfame potassium) to cut down on the calories. I really didn’t note the artificial sweeteners when sampling.
The can design was created by Kenny Vidinich, who was the winner of the crowd-sourced contest. It’s a bright pink and lime green design, which to be honest, is a bit hard to read when it comes to the flavor name (which is helped by clear text on the bottom of the can denoting that this is a “Sparkling Cherry Lime”). The can also contains a QR Code as part of a contest, as well as a classy white top (in contrast to the standard metallic look).
Overall, this is a refreshing drink in a distinctive can. It’s a bummer that it can only be found at 7-Eleven, as I think many more would be interested in sampling the beverage, but will be limited due to distribution (though there are 6,700+ stores in the U.S.) If you find it, it’s a tasty “rickey” to try!
