Coming Soon: Pepsi X Dragonfruit

As part of Pepsi's sponsorship of Fox's The X-Factor reality show, they ran a promotional event called the "The Pepsi Flavor Audition Tour." Basically, it was a chance for people across the country to test and vote on 4 possible flavors (Fire, Dragon, Freeze, & Gold) . The winning flavor was announced on October 4: Dragonfruit.

Pepsi X Dragonfruit

Pepsi X Dragonfruit

Per Pepsi, this new flavor has been available since October 8 for a limited time. Packaging will be 20 oz PET bottles, 12-packs of cans, and 2-liter bottles.

As for what it tastes like, we'll have to track that down to find out. Will it be simply Pepsi with some flavor thrown in… with the "X" portion of the name meaning nothing more than a tie-in to the show? Probably.

Pepsi has had these plans for a little while at least, with their first trademark filing on the "Pepsi X" dated May 13, 2011 (#85320381). No description is provided, other than it's just another "concentrates, syrups or powders used in the preparation of soft drinks."

Curiously, this looks to be a slightly lower calorie drink based on the nutrition facts.  It's sweetened with high fructose corn syrup as well as acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) and sucralose.

Pepsi X Dragonfruit
Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, natural flavor, phosphoric acid, potassium citrate, potassium sorbate (preserves freshness), caffeine, acesulfame potassium, gum arabic, sucralose

A 12 oz can contains 110 calories, 35 mg sodium, and 31 g carbs (30 g sugars). Caffeine content is 3.58 mg/oz.

  1. I'm so excited to try this dragonfruit being my favorite fruit. I can't even imagine what it would taste like and can't wait to try. Too bad shipping to Canada is going to kill me..

  2. I cringed looking at this can. The outlined, wobbly and awfully skewed dotted background and white ribbon that runs through their logo makes it look as thought a drunk person executed it. Another win for coca-cola.

  3. Great work once again by Steve to dig up this information.

  4. Nigel Fisher says:

Damn! I wish it wasn't sweetened with sucralose – that stuff plays with my digestion. This looks really good, though – it might be worth the pain.

  5. Zachary Jacob Zblewski says:

I had this stuff last week. I don't know what to think. I usually like fruit-flavored colas, but this… not so much.

  6. I had this a few days ago. It tasted like cinnamon ginger ale.

  7. Coming soon? I picked up a twelve-pack at Walmart a little over a week ago, and I'm not really impressed – much like someone above me said, it tastes a lot like ginger ale, with a sweet cola/cinammon taste as well. I'm not going to be buying it again.

  8. Just tried it. It tastes amazing! It is one of the finest sodas I have had recently. The problem is, it is sweetened with sugar, and so far as I can tell, there is no diet version!? This is a real problem for me since I am trying to cut way back on sugary sodas. I guess I could try mixing it 50/50 with Pepsi Max, or something like that. But yeah, if you're the type of person that doesn't care about putting tons of sugar into your body, this is one of the best ones to come along in years.

Too bad it's "limited edition". Pepsi always does this. I really started liking Pepsi Next with the Mango flavor earlier this summer. Then I found out that that too was "limited edition", and I could no longer find it in any store! Way to go Pepsi! get me hooked on a flavor, and then snatch it away, never to be seen again. You did it to me 20 years ago with Diet Crystal Pepsi, then again more recently with Pepsi Blue, and now in 2012 your modis operandi continues. But this time maybe I will be a little more prepared. If I still like this stuff as much as I do now by the time I get to the bottom of this 2-liter bottle, maybe I'll just go to my local grocery and fill a shopping cart up with about 6 cases of the stuff, so I'll have it for years to come to break out on the weekend, or for special occasions.

  9. alleyrulez says:

just bought a bottle today. reminds me of that "Summer" flavor that they had years ago.

    awesome stuff!

  10. Kyle Walker says:

This is beyond disgusting! How did this ever win a competition? I purchased a 20oz bottle the other day because I enjoy the show and I love Pepsi. After I finished checking out, I cracked open the bottle immediately to give it a try. I took 1 drink and almost spit it out. I proceeded by throwing my FULL BOTTLE (minus 1 sip) into the trash. The girl at the register laughed due to my reaction and said she had sampled the soda earlier in the day and had the exact same experience. In the trash after one sip. Everyone in my family also sampled this nasty beverage and also thought it was gross. Epic fail, Pepsico, epic fail.

  11. Just had a can of it…definitely an acquired taste. Cactus fruit (related to the kiwi) mixed with cola is indeed strange. I have another 11 cans to drink. Let's see if it grows on me…

  12. Christopher says:

It's Pepsi blue. I realize its been a long time since I've had Pepsi blue, but I swear one taste and it took me back.

  13. alleyrulez says:

can't believe all the hate this is getting…

  14. Not a fan……..love Pepsi…love X-factor…I DO NOT like the flavor of this drink. I'm very disappointed in the flavor and had high hopes since it was by Pepsi. Not sure how/why this flavor won…the other three must have been nasty for this flavor to "win". It almost tastes like a strange, stale ginger ale… It also has a bad after taste.

  15. Overall, I thought it tasted like a really good fruity flavor with the aftertaste tasting very similar to Coca-Cola.

  16. My mom bought a 2 liter on accident, thinking it was regular Pepsi. The "Dragonfruit" part is so tiny, you don't notice it, so the bottle just looks like normal Pepsi. No one in our family has ever had Dragonfruit, so we had no idea what to expect. My brother thought it tasted like Coke. My son, who wasn't around when my brother tried it, tried it later and also said it tastes like Coke. We don't normally drink Coke except at McDonald's, so they're comparing it to fountain Coke from McDonald's. I wasn't really sure what to make of the flavor. It definitely had a fruity flavor, but the smell was stronger than the flavor. It also had kind of a weird cinnamon like flavor mixed in. I definitely won't try it again. I'll just stick to Pepsi Throwback.

  17. I agree with the person above, it does remind me of a Coke fountain drink.
I'm not too fond of it though, won't be buying it again.

  18. ascrummett says:

I have been looking for this in the stores in the Sacramento, CA area. Any suggestions as to where I can find a bottle to try? Doesn't sound like many people are enjoying it, but I'd like to try it for myself.

  19. Disgusting flavor. My husband just bought it by accident since the labeling is similar to regular pepsi. Tastes awful, huge disappointment when I wanted real pepsi. Never again.

  20. Mitch cumstein says:

Most disgusting pop ever!!! I now play jokes on people with it. I put 1 can in a cooler with regular Pepsi and wait and watch people taste it. They all get mad and say its the worst tasting pop ever.

  21. I bought this once. That was enough. Pepsi X is revolting. It's just the equally nasty Pepsi Next ( with HFCS & multiple artificial sweeteners) with a little dragonfruit flavor. My girlfriend bought a 2 liter by mistake & I refused to drink it. I gave it to my sister and both she & her boyfriend took one sip & then refused to drink anymore.
