Review: Triple XXX Root Beer

You'd think a root beer with a name containing many X's would have some sort of racy history, right? But that's not the case with Triple XXX Root Beer!

Triple XXX Root Beer

Triple XXX Root Beer

The brand has quite the storied past, originating in Galveston, TX in 1895, as a beer that was packaged in oak barrels that were marked with "XXX" for some reason. By the time Prohibition hit in 1918, the parent company had shifted to soft drinks and Triple XXX Root Beer became a flagship product. The brand has changed hands many, many times and is now owned by the Triple XXX Root Beer Corporation of West Lafayette, IN.

Our sample came in a 12 oz brown glass bottle, complete with paper label that showcased the vintage logo design. The tagline on the bottle proclaims that this root beer "makes thirst a joy." Like most root beers, this drink is caffeine free — plus it's also sweetened with pure cane sugar!

The drink is a light caramel color with a very light carbonated head. It smells rather sweet, not very heavy on licorice scent. As for taste, it's just average, to be honest. On the sweet side, definitely not bitter. More in the vein of a commercially-popular root beer like A&W. The finish is clean, which is nice, adorned with a slight creamy flavor. It's a nice one-time experience, but nothing memorable. I can't see myself tracking down this drink as a "must have."

Cool story. Average taste.
