Weeks before the Super Bowl, Coke teased their “Mirage” spot (which pointed to CokeChase.com). It features a race between 3 factions — badlanders, cowboys, and showgirls — all attempting to arrive at a large bottle of Coke in the desert. In their attempt to engage the public, the website was inaccessible for a large portion of the Super Bowl due to high traffic. Ooops!
The winner ended up being the Showgirls, which prompted this follow-up spot that aired right after the game concluded:
Incidentally, Coke ran into some negative PR when the “Mirage” spot was first debuted back in January, with Arab groups claiming that the beverage giant was promoting a “negative stereotype” with their camel rider. That’s probably what prompted this bonus installment in the series:
Incidentally, in the lead-up to Super Bowl Sunday, Pepsi took a humorous jab at the “CokeChase” with a parody video spot that promoted Pepsi Next…
… which, of course, Coke responded to as well:
