Can Holiday: National Submarine Day – April 11

Origin

Submarine Day commemorates April 11, 1900, which is when the United States Navy purchased the USS Holland, its first commissioned submarine. It was a “hybrid” of sorts as it was propelled by gasoline on the surface and electricity when submerged.

How to Celebrate

Today is a good day to visit one of the many submarine museums in the United States. Alternatively, you can go to your local sandwich shop and order a submarine sandwich. That’s exactly what I’ll be doing today.

To honor this day we are featuring the 1987 Coca-Cola Tunafish Salad Submarine can from The Netherlands.  Holland is a region in the western part of the Netherlands. On it in Dutch are the vertical words “Drink Coca-Cola ook ‘ns bij:”, which loosely translates to: “Drink Coca-Cola with:” This is followed by a full side of the can showing a line-art drawing of a Tunafish Salad Submarine and a recipe for it.

Happy National Submarine Day (4/11)!
