Kindergarten Day is celebrated on April 21st in honor of German Educator, Friedrich Froebel who was born on April 21, 1782. Friedrich started the first kindergarten in Germany in 1837. He believed in having children learn through song, play, art, and nature. Some kindergartens had real gardens attached to them. Translated from German, “kinder” means “children” and “garten” means “garden”. The first American Kindergarten opened in 1873 in St. Louis, Missouri.
How to Celebrate
If you have a child of your own, you can celebrate Kindergarten Day by spending some time with them and teaching them some art, reading them a story, or simply playing a game with them like Candy Land or Chutes and Ladders. You can also watch the 1990′s film Kindergarten Cop starring Arnold Schwarzenegger or any number of children’s television shows that exist today on channels like Nick Jr. or Disney Jr.
To honor this day we are featuring a 1987 can of Redstar Kinder Cola from Germany. As I mentioned earlier, “kinder” in German translates to “children”. Typically, all “kinder” soft drinks, including this one are caffeine free as they are marketed to kids.
Happy Kindergarten Day (4/21)!
