On May 7th, 1895, Alexander Popov of Russia (formerly the Soviet Union) gave the first demonstration of radio before the Russian Physical and Chemical Society in St. Petersburg. The first Radio Day was celebrated in 1945, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Popov’s invention.
How to Celebrate
Radio Day would be a good day to listen to the radio. You have plenty of choices today with AM, FM, Satellite, and Internet radio to choose from. Alternative to broadcast radio, there is CB (Citizens’ Band) radio, radio-controlled toys (cars, planes, etc.), radio astronomy, and radio navigation. Perhaps you can also wonder what Popov would think if he knew how far his invention has evolved.
To celebrate this day, we selected the 1980s Fanta Orange Can from Thailand featuring Mickey Mouse roller-skating wearing sunglasses and a wild shirt while holding a radio on his shoulders.
Happy Radio Day (5/7)!
