Can Holiday: Mother's Day – May 12

Origin

Mother's Day, which is celebrated on May 12th this year, always falls on the second Sunday of May in the United States. It is celebrated on different days around the world. It began in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She successfully campaigned to make "Mother's Day" a national holiday in 1914, but was disappointed at its commercialization by the 1920s. Anna Jarvis was also known for founding Mothers' Day Work Clubs to improve sanitary and health conditions, as well as caring for Union and Confederate soldiers by giving them food, medical attention, and clothing.

How to Celebrate

Mother's Day is a day to honor your Mother. There are many ways to do this, whether you think about her, call her, visit, buy her gifts, or simply tell her you love her. It is also a good day to tell her "thank you," because if it wasn't for her, you wouldn't be here. If you are fortunate enough to have the ability to reach out to your Mother today, please do so and let her know you appreciate her.
