Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on May 12th this year, always falls on the second Sunday of May in the United States. It is celebrated on different days around the world. It began in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She successfully campaigned to make “Mother’s Day” a national holiday in 1914, but was disappointed at its commercialization by the 1920s. Anna Jarvis was also known for founding Mothers’ Day Work Clubs to improve sanitary and health conditions, as well as caring for Union and Confederate soldiers by giving them food, medical attention, and clothing.
How to Celebrate
Mother’s Day is a day to honor your Mother. There are many ways to do this, whether you think about her, call her, visit, buy her gifts, or simply tell her you love her. It is also a good day to tell her “thank you,” because if it wasn’t for her, you wouldn’t be here. If you are fortunate enough to have the ability to reach out to your Mother today, please do so and let her know you appreciate her.
To celebrate this day, we selected two cans from the 1979 Nehi Happy Days set. The first is the Happy Days Nehi Grape Series 1 No. 16 of 35 can featuring a photo of Marion Cunningham, played by actress Marion Ross. The second is the Happy Days Nehi Orange Series 1 No. 32 of 35 can and has a photo of Marion Cunningham kissing her son, Richie Cunningham, played by Ron Howard. Happy Days was a television sitcom that aired from January 15, 1974, to September 24, 1984, that focused on the quintessential American family of the mid-1950s to mid-1960s. Marion Cunningham was the matriarch of the family and portrayed the ideal mother to many fans of this sitcom.
