Memorial Day began as Decoration Day to remember those who died during the American Civil War. By the 20th Century the name changed and the holiday’s purpose extended to remembering those who died in any military service. Memorial Day is held on the last Monday of May and not on a specific day to allow for a three day weekend.
How to Celebrate
Memorial Day is celebrated by remembering those who lost their lives serving in the military. Spend some time thinking about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice by attending a parade or by visiting a memorial.
To celebrate this day, we selected the 1981 Iron City Marine Corp League beer can. On it is a bulldog in a helmet that says “Devil Dog”, a waving American flag, and the state of Pennsylvania. The can reads, “Department of Pennsylvania Salutes Its Marine Corp League Detachments”. The Marine Corp League is the only congressionally chartered United States Marine Corps-related veteran’s organization in the United States.
Happy Memorial Day (5/27)!
