World Environment Day was started by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to celebrate the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The first World Environment Day was held in 1973. It is run yearly by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and is similar to Earth Day focusing on environmentalism.
How to Celebrate
This year’s theme for World Environment Day is “Think.Eat.Save. Reduce Your Foodprint” with Mongolia being the host country. Watch this video by UNEP starring Brazilian Fashion Model Gisele Bϋndchen and American Actor Don Cheadle about World Environment Day 2013. You can also visit the UNEP World Environment Day website for a great deal of information about our environment and what you can do to help preserve it.
From the video:
“This year’s theme is FOOD WASTE. 1/3 of all FOOD produced around the world is being WASTED or LOST. We all can reduce our FOODPRINT! Reducing Food Waste SAVES water, land use, emissions! Reducing Food Waste is good for people, planet and your pocket. Make a pledge to reduce your food waste TODAY! It’s easy. Just THINK.EAT.Save. REDUCE YOUR FOODPRINT.”
To celebrate this day, we selected the 2007 Pepsi “Be an Environmental” Hero Can. This can has very involved artwork showing outdoor objects like flowers, trees, birds, clouds, rain, hot air balloons, rainbows, and the sun. The flowers, raindrops and the sun’s rays are all made of tiny recycling symbols. The text on the can reads, “Be an environmental hero. Join Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup at www.kebman.org – Pepsi is a proud sponsor of Keep America Beautiful.”
Happy World Environment Day (6/5)!
