Review: Jones Soda Halloween Collection (2013) – Red Licorice, Blood Orange, Caramel Apple, and Candy Corn

After not offering special Halloween flavors since 2009, Jones Soda is back with 4 flavors to celebrate this spooky season.

3 of them are reruns, while 1 is a new addition.

Jones Red Licorice Soda (2013)

Jones Red Licorice Soda (2013)

New for 2013 is Jones Red Licorice Soda, packaged in an 8 oz red can featuring Frankenstein's monster in green. The side denotes a phrase, "Night of Red Licorice." The drink itself if red in color, much like fruit punch. It smells like a red cream soda. Flavorwise, Red Licorice debuts with a sweet beginning, mellowing out to a clean aftertaste that showcases the red licorice flavor quite well. Sweetened with cane sugar, this drink is very clean. Overall, it's not bad, but I really would have liked more flavor into the finish. Surprisingly, Jones Red Licorice Soda is quite good for a novelty beverage.

Jones Blood Orange Soda (2013)

Jones Blood Orange Soda (2013)

Jones Blood Orange Soda debuted in 2008 and returned in 2009, both in bottle form. For 2013, this redish-orange beverage debuts in the 8 oz can format, sweetened with cane sugar. I'll tell you right now that Blood Orange is probably my favorite Halloween flavor that Jones has done over the years. It's got a faint orange scent, but that throws you off, because it's really more like a light, grapefruity drink. While it's a novelty flavor, this Blood Orange is the kind of taste that I would purchase throughout the year. It's light, orangey, and refreshing. Oddly enough, the can is actually purple, showcasing Dracula on the front. But don't be fooled. You'll want to take a bite out of this flavor!

Jones Caramel Apple Soda (2013)

Jones Caramel Apple Soda (2013)

When Jones first debuted their Halloween flavors back in 2005, Jones Caramel Apple Soda was part of that original 8 oz canned lineup. It returns this year, sweetened with cane sugar for the first time. This dark brown drink has a distinctive apple juice smell. That carries over into the flavor, which a strong apple base, layered with a caramel overtone. Didn't think it was possible, but this drink actually does taste like a caramel apple. It's definitely not an everyday beverage, but the stuff in this orange can makes for a great Halloween flavor.

Jones Candy Corn Soda (2013)

Last, and intentionally least, is Jones Candy Corn Soda. This drink returns for a record 6th appearance as part of the Halloween lineup. Previously, I've described it as gag reflex-inducing, with a look of "dirty urine." This beverage is bright orange in color (and will stain your sink or clothing, so be careful), with a comical candy corn scent. It doesn't really smell like its namesake, but more on the caramelish side of things. But for some reason, the drink in the Wolfman-adorned can didn't really offend me as much this year. It's creamy, sweet, dandyish, and clean overall. I'm sure that the flavor hasn't changed, so perhaps I'm just more generous this year. Completely a novelty drink, it's still my least favorite of the 4 offerings this year.

I'm glad Jones Soda saw it fit to bring back novelty Halloween flavors this year. It always makes the fall just a little more special!
