Review: Trader Joe’s Vintage Orange Cream Soda

Following in the footsteps of Trader Joe’s Vintage Cola and Trader Joe’s Vintage Root Beer, Trader Joe’s Vintage Orange Cream Soda is a privately-branded, cane sugar-sweetened beverage from specialty grocery chain Trader Joe’s.

It’s bottled in 12 oz clear glass, with a retro graphics package emphasizing the colors of orange and green. The scent emanating from this bright orange drink is very similar to that of a frozen Dreamsicle.

The label also notes that this drink is “vegan” and that there are “no gluten ingredients used”. Other proclamations include “caffeine free”, “no artificial flavors”, and “no preservatives”.

The taste is quite clean, with a level of sweetness expected for an orange cream soda. Surprisingly, the drink did feel a little “chemical”, despite the more authentic nature of the ingredients. For example, while a clean feeling is present, the aftertaste felt a bit muddled, almost like you needed a mint to refresh your mouth after a sip.

For a store brand, not the worst thing in the world. But there are better orange cream sodas out there. For example, even with HFCS, I would rank Dad’s Orange Cream Soda as a better-tasting product.
