Another chocolate-flavored soft drink in the vain of Jones Christmas Cocoa Soda and Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper, Jones Soda Chocolate Coins Soda tastes just like a liquid, carbonated version of Tootsie Rolls. It's a great tasting flavor in the 2007 Jones Soda Holiday collection.

Rounding out the Chanukah Pack, part of the 2007 Jones Soda Holiday collection, is a beverage that pretty much tastes like a carbonated, liquid version of Tootsie Rolls, Jones Soda Chocolate Coins Soda… complete with dreidel!

Jones Soda Chocolate Coins Soda

Not knowing much about what dreidel games and chocolate coins had in common, I hopped over to Wikipedia for a little education:

Chocolate money, also known as chocolate coins, consists small disks of chocolate, moulded into the shape of coins, and wrapped in gold or silver foil for added effect… also a common Hanukkah gift, known as Hanukkah gelt or chocolate gelt. They are often used in place of real money in dreidel games.

Spin the included plastic dreidal!

Bundled with the Chanukah Pack is a plastic dreidel, complete with game directions on the back of the box packaging, so beyond enjoying the beverages, you can have some fun entertainment as well!

Chocolate Coins Soda packs 190 calories, 47g of that inverted cane sugar, and 35mg of sodium. The full ingredient list consists of carbonated water, inverted cane sugar, natural and artificial flavors, caramel color, phosphoric acid, and sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (as preservatives).

Um, nice photo, but those aren't coins

But really, how does it taste?

Well, this brownish soda is very similar in scent to Christmas Cocoa Soda, but with more of a Tootsie Roll, chocolate influence. And the taste, as mentioned in the intro, is pretty much a liquid version of the candy itself. It's pleasant and attractive, nothing disgusting at all. It's not a flavor that would go well with food items, but as a novelty soda, I don't really think that was the intent anyway. It's a good drink that I'll miss with the holidays passing by.

The photo on this bottle, Photo #9083, was submitted by Jeremy Doorten of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Three cheers for the folks in Canada! And nice job on a creative flavor, Jones!

OK, so I know what you are thinking. "Cocoa-flavored soda? Gross!" Surprisingly, this holiday trend of chocolate-influenced drinks (started with Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper) is actually pretty good. Our beverage review of Jones Soda Christmas Cocoa Soda notes that it actually DOES taste like cocoa... and that's a good thing. Very unique flavor, nice balance of carbonation and taste, and a welcoming aroma make this installment of the 2007 Jones Soda Holiday collection a winner!

There seems to be a resurgence of chocolate-themed soft drinks during this fall/winter season appearing on the market. We've already taken a look at Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper, which had a pretty positive result. Now it's time to jump into another chocolately-based soda adventure found in the 2007 Jones Soda Holiday collection. So kick off your shoes, huddle by the fire, and wrap your hands around a nice mug of Jones Soda Christmas Cocoa Soda.

Jones Soda Christmas Cocoa Soda

This drink is available as part of a 4-Pack, meaning you can share the cocoa experience many times over! And to be honest, that's not a bad idea, because this drink is pretty good. Yes, it's surprising that this didn't taste gross, given the pattern of Jones holiday flavors.

4-pack Bottle Packaging – One Side
Photo #9040 by Chele V, Albany, NY
(Apparently, Chele has a short last name!)

Appearance wise, the soft drink is very brown in color, dark, and cola-like. Upon opening the bottle, there is an amazingly authentic chocolate smell. Very attractive. The scent is reminiscent of melted chocolate.

4-pack Bottle Packaging – Other Side
Photo #9053 by Lauren Renner, Lexington, SC

Upon my first sip, there was an initial chocolate taste. That impression grew as the flavors hit the back of my throat and delighted across my tastebuds. The flavor had that somewhat "liquid powder" impression that you would associate with hot chocolate. It was delightful to see that pleasantly brought to a soft drink format.

Festive blue & green ornaments
Photo #9026 by Julie Davis, St. Louis, MO
(My favorite photo out of this batch!)

Surprisingly, there isn't much of an aftertaste. It's a pretty clean flavor, probably due to the use of Jones' inverted cane sugar that they like to brag about these days. Because of that, yes, Christmas Cocoa Soda is Kosher, so tell all your Jewish friends! Additionally, there's a decent combination of sugar and salt to bring out the flavors (47g and 35mg, respectively), but not make you gag like previous Holiday Pack attempts (I'm looking at you, Turkey & Gravy!).

Pipe cleaner reindeer?
Photo #9077 by Erin Welsh, Adel, GA

Like other Christmas-oriented 4-Pack installments, the labeling is green and red, with silver letters denoting "Jones Pure Cane Soda". There are sayings under the screw cap like other Jones bottled drinks (Mine said "You will be successful in any gathering.")

This dog totally is going to mess up the tree
Photo #9072 by Curt Cochran, Dumfries, VA
(Curt is from Dumfries, VA. Do they have Dumb Onion Rings too?)

Also continuing a Jones Soda tradition, the use of customer-submitted photos can be found on this holiday-themed beverage. These images not only appeared on the bottles, but also on both sides of the cardboard 4-Pack packaging.

These arches look pretty cool!
Photo #9023 by Eric Pennington, Enumclaw, WA

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by Jones Soda Christmas Cocoa Soda. This drink is recommended by those of us here at BevReview.com. It's not exactly something you'd have with dinner or would drink all the time, but as a uniquely-flavored holiday beverage, Jones nailed it. Now, one wonders if you were to give it the Hot Dr Pepper treatment and partake of this soda hot, would it still be good? Would it taste like real cocoa?

If you try that, let us know!

Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper is actually very good! It you are a diet drink lover and are seeking a new flavor... or even if you are a mainstream beverage drinker curious about this flavor combination, it's worth a try. It seems to be targeted at the Coca-Cola Zero audience with its mix of aspartame and Ace-K sweeteners. As a limited time drink, I hope it does well in the marketplace!

Back in October, reports started coming out proclaiming a new flavor extension for Dr Pepper. What was interesting about these rumors is that they were for a diet-only flavor: Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper.

The diet-only decision wasn't unprecedented for a new flavor. PepsiCo has done the same thing with their Jazz lineup of tastes (Diet Pepsi Jazz Black Cherry French Vanilla, Diet Pepsi Jazz Strawberries & Cream, Diet Pepsi Jazz Caramel Cream) as has Coke with some Diet Coke variations (Diet Coke with Lemon). Even Cadbury Schweppes has offered different diet flavors of 7Up that you can't find with the flagship (7Up Plus: Mixed Berry, 7Up Plus: Island Fruit).

Diet Dr Pepper actually saw an increase in market share last year, moving up in sales 6.4%, good enough to be the #10 best selling brand (replacing a tie between Sierra Mist and Diet Mountain Dew). In contrast, the flagship non-diet Dr Pepper sits at #6 overall (Source: Beverage-Digest.com). Diet Dr Pepper also has a rather positive reputation as being a drink that pretty closely resembles its inspiration, so it makes sense that Cadbury Schweppes would invest in boosting this brand a little with a limited edition flavor.

The packaging itself is very attractive. It integrates the newer Dr Pepper shield, but clearly shows that this is not the same drink as Cherry Vanilla or Berries & Cream. The white background is associated with diet versions of Dr Pepper, so that was consistent. The use of reds and browns to demonstrate the cherry and chocolate flavors was inspired. It's hard to make brown seem "hip" (unless you are UPS), but this design pulled it off nicely. The use of silvery explosion-style graphics all helped here.

Additionally, the graphics illustrating chocolate-dipped cherries pretty much sums up what you are about to experience. One note, however, is that the labeling did not denote this beverage as part of the "Soda Fountain Classics" line, as initial versions of Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper Berries & Cream did upon rollout. As this is a limited edition, it's only available in 2 liter and 20 oz. bottles, as well as 12 packs of cans. And despite Cadbury Schweppes' claims to the contrary, Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper is the 4th flavor extension to the brand, not the 3rd.

The color of the beverage is pretty much cola, but with a very noticeable red tint. This also hints at the cherry influence found in the drink. When you open the bottle, the bouquet readily produces a very accurate reproduction of chocolate-covered cherries. It's uncanny. The scent is pretty dead-on! It's not everyday you are enticed to drink a chocolate soda (unless you are a fan of Canfield's Diet Chocolate Fudge Soda), but the smell of Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper really draws you in.

In order to get a broader sense of opinions, we shared a 2 liter bottle of this drink at our Thanksgiving gathering with family. The overall reaction to the flavor was very positive. Comments like "this is diet?" and "wow, that really does taste like chocolate and cherries" were pretty common. Personally, I liked the flavor quite a bit. Yes, it's diet, so obviously there are those negative connotations. Interestingly, this drink is sweetened with a combination of both aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K), which is pretty uncommon for Diet Dr Pepper. Most of the drinks in that lineup just use aspartame, except for Diet Dr Pepper Berries & Cream. I think the mix of sweeteners here works very well.

The flavor was good overall. Cherry is very prevalent, but it's balanced rather well against the chocolate taste. Another comment that was made at Thanksgiving was "there's quite a bit going on there" in regards to all the flavors. That's very true; it's a complicated mix. Lots of cherry, lots of chocolate, just a tad bit of Dr Pepper influence. But overall, it works quite nicely. I think they have a winner here. (I'm not sure how well it would do in the marketplace as a non-diet entry, though I would welcome such a flavor.)

Overall, I recommend Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr Pepper if you are looking for something new in your diet drink lineup… or even if you are a mainstream beverage drinker curious about this flavor combination. It has a Coke Zero-like quality about it, in that the artificial sweeteners are pretty tolerable. That's probably the audience it's going after given Zero's spinoff flavors into both Cherry and Vanilla.

As for the "Limited Edition" timeframe, I'm going to guess this flavor will be available throughout the 2007 holiday season. Of interest, however, was the $1 off coupon that came on my 2-liter bottle. It's good for a 12-pack of Diet Dr Pepper, Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper, or Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr Pepper… and expires April 30, 2008. I find that curious. One wonders if the flavor is slated to last a little longer than just the holidays (about 6 months). The coupon also omitted the Diet Berries & Cream flavor for some reason. Hmmm. Might Cherry Chocolate replace that flavor in the long run if it proves to be successful?

Give it a try… and soon! It's only going to be around for a little while… whatever that means!
