Jones Soda introduces three flavors in 16 oz. cans, targeted for the convenience store market: Green Apple, Berry Lemonade and Strawberry Lime.

At the recent National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) Show here in Chicago, I got a chance to talk to Jones Soda's Stacey Donahue about the launch of their new 16 oz. cans.

The introduction of the cans took place at the NACS show as they are targeted at the convenience store market. It's a bit easier to get into the C-store world with cans vs. the traditional Jones Soda bottles, so this is a logical move. Initially, only 3 flavors will be offered, Green Apple, Berry Lemonade, and Strawberry Lime. Why these? Per the official press release, "these three flavors boast the highest sell-through rate among single glass bottles according to AC Nielsen syndicated data, which for the 13 weeks ending Sept. 3, showed these three SKUs were up 26% versus one year ago."

It's also important to note that 16 oz. cans aren't a strange size for Jones these days, given that their WhoopAss Energy Drink, WhoopAss Grapple, and Sugar Free WhoopAss are all packaged the same way.

Some may remember Jones' first foray into cans back in 2007, signing a deal with National Beverage to make 12 oz. canned versions of many of their flavors. However, this was a doomed initiative, as Jones struggled with distribution, marketing, and high costs associated with putting the canned items on mainstream store shelves.

<img src="http://www.bevreview.com/wp-content/image_jonessoda_oldcans1.jpg" alt="Jones Soda 2007 12 oz. Jones Soda Cans
(Source: CanMuseum.com. Used by Permission)

While other problems were in play for the company, the move to 12 oz. cans was widely viewed as a "bad thing" that put Jones on dangerous financial ground. The company assumed that their premium beverage/pricing would translate into the can market, however, if you actually looked at the product they delivered, it pretty much resembled a store brand in appearance. It just didn't feel like something from Jones. Sales reflected that impression.

New 16 oz. cans on display

That seems to have changed with this latest can initiative. Just one look at the design and yes, this looks like a Jones Soda product! The fan-submitted photos are back… and I'm told they will be rotated out from time to time. The label design mimics that of the glass bottles. They just look fun overall.

<img src="http://www.bevreview.com/wp-content/image_jonessoda_cans_12oz1.jpg" alt="Jones Soda 12 oz.
The sales sheet I was given, targeted at retailers, also showed 6 flavors in 12 oz. cans: Zilch Black Cherry, Cream Soda, Cola, Berry Lemonade, Starwberry Lime, and Root Beer. These are probably targeted at C-stores and other markets as well, but the 16 oz. cans are really the story here.

<img src="http://www.bevreview.com/wp-content/image_jonessoda_cans_16oz1.jpg" alt="Jones Soda 16 oz.
As for the taste, I felt that they were pretty much in line with what you get with the bottled versions (though I was unable to do a side-by-side comparison). For example, Jones Strawberry Lime Soda still has that light red color and is very sweet with the use of cane sugar. The start of the drink is bitter, prompted by the lime, but it rounds out eventually when the strawberry kicks in. It's somewhat harsh, but in a good way.

Jones Soda at NACS Show 2011

Just the same, Jones Berry Lemonade Soda is light blue and also pretty sweet. "Puckery" is the name I'd throw at this drink, given the lemonade roots, but more soundly grounded in a berry flavor. It really does grab the back of your throat with a sour experience. In both cases, I didn't really taste that "aluminum" feeling you often get, but I'm sure mentally there are those who will still prefer the glass bottle.

The 16 oz. cans should be appearing now and are slated to be priced at $1.29 MSRP.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about the nutritional contents in the 16 oz. cans…

Jones Strawberry Lime Soda
Carbonated water, inverted cane sugar, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, modified food starch, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (as preservatives), ester gum, Red 40, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor)

The new 16 oz. can contains 220 calories, 40 mg sodium, and 54 g carbs (52 g sugars). Caffeine free.

Select markets bottle Mountain Dew in PepsiCo's "Sidekick" bottle, showcasing a "grip" shape, smaller label design, and improved shelf branding.

Thanks to a tip from reader Dylan Bannister via the BevReview Facebook Page, while I was traveling through North Carolina on vacation recently, I came across a couple examples of PepsiCo's new "Sidekick" bottle, which reminds me a lot of Dr Pepper Snapple Group's "Legacy" bottle.

The folks at FoodProcessing.com provided this description of the bottle during their coverage of the Institute of Packaging Professionals 2011 AmeriStar Package Awards competition, at which the "Sidekick" was honored:

(Source: Dylan Bannister.

In the summer of 2010, PepsiCo launched a new 20-oz. bottle specifically designed for Mountain Dew with the goals of enhancing brand image, improving functionality and gaining better shelf impact. This unique bottle was designed to work within the existing manufacturing and distribution infrastructure while using the same amount of resin as the previous bottle, and achieving material reduction by reducing the size of the label.

Like the "Legacy" bottle, "Sidekick" also uses a very narrow band for the
label, which as noted reduces material cost. Additionally, it puts the brand above any sort of rack/holder that might be found in a convenience store, making it more visible.

DPSG's "Legacy" Bottle vs. PepsiCo's "Sidekick" Bottle

In the case of Mountain Dew, I think this actually works quite well, since the brand's logo can be easily condensed for that space. In the case of DPSG's implementation with "Legacy", some of the brands don't translate as well. Long time Dew fans might remember Mountain Dew MDX which had a smaller, 14 oz bottle shape that looked a lot like the Legacy/Sidekick design.

(Source: Dylan Bannister. Used by Permission.)

The "Sidekick" seems to be currently implemented in just a few markets at the moment. Thanks to Dylan, we have a look at all the Mountain Dew flavors in this new bottle design. Note that only the flagship flavor uses a green-tinted bottle, while the other flavors are clear.

(Source: PepsiCo)

If you look closely at the bottle itself, you'll note that there is a grip design in use, with triple ridges implemented on opposite sides below the label band. An embossed "MD" logo also appears on sides that don't feature the ridges.

It will be interesting to see if this bottle shows up on a broader basis. It seems like all the big players are reshaping their plastic bottles beyond what we've become accustomed to, all for the sake of being distinctive and more visible. Do you think this strategy will work? Post your thoughts in the comments!

Dr Pepper Snapple Group introduces the "Legacy" bottle as a replacement for their current 20 oz. shape, used for brands in the company's portfolio that do not have their own brand-specific bottle designs.

Per Packaging Digest, Dr Pepper Snapple Group is rolling out what they are calling the "Legacy" bottle as a replacement for their current 20 oz. shape. We've already started to see some implementations of this with their brands here in the Chicago area.

You'll note that the bottom of the bottle has more of a "grip" element in play, while the top features a narrow "label band" for the branding of the drink. Per the article, "the new Legacy bottle will be used for many of DPSG's flavor brands, including 7Up, Sunkist soda, Canada Dry, Sun Drop, Squirt and other soft drinks in the company's portfolio that do not have their own brand-specific bottle designs." You'll note that Dr Pepper is left off that list, as it has its own unique shape.

It's definitely a unique look that breaks from the feel you get with Coke's "Contour" bottle and whatever Pepsi uses. DPSG is obviously looking to stand out from the other Big 2 with this change.

However, I have to wonder about the branding issues on the "label band" now that it's so much smaller. For some brands with more horizontally-oriented logos, it works pretty well (such as we've illustrated with 7Up and Squirt).

On the bright side, it might make Squirt's ugly new design look a lot better!

Unfortunately, I've also seen this type of bottle used for RC Cola, which has a prominently vertical design, and logo is just shrunk to the point of being visually useless.

It's definitely going to be a packaging designer's challenge to make the Legacy bottle work!

What do you think of this new bottle type?

Mountain Dew Pitch Black returns in 2011 for a limited time as part of a new "Back By Popular DEW-mand" program the folks at PepsiCo. It's slated to be released for 8 weeks starting in May 2011.

Update 5/16/11: Read our reviews of 2011 versions of Mountain Dew Pitch Black and Mountain Dew Supernova.

Original 1/7/11 Story:
Some old Mountain Dew favorites will be returning for a limited time as part of a new "Back By Popular DEW-mand" program the folks at PepsiCo are rolling out. The idea is to bring back fan favorites in 8 week cycles. First up on the list, per Andrea Foote at Pepsi, is Mountain Dew Pitch Black.

Mountain Dew Pitch Black (2004)

First released in 2004, Mountain Dew Pitch Black has definitely been a favorite of ours here at BevReview, and based on the continual comments and posts shared by everyone else, we don't seem to be alone. Everyone seems to miss this grape-flavored take on Mountain Dew.

Numerous readers dropped us a line to let us know that Dew Labs, the community of select Mountain Dew enthusiasts run by Pepsi, posted the following note today:

Just in case you thought we didn't hear all your cries for Pitch Black over the last year and a half, you along with DEW nation have helped influence Mtn Dew's next big program once again! We'll be filling you in on the details coming soon, but you heard it here and on Facebook:

"The big secret is out – Mountain Dew Pitch Black will be Back By Popular DEW-mand for a limited time in 2011. We've been hearing for years from Pitch Black lovers that they want their favorite drink back and their unwavering support made it impossible to ignore… and it was time to make it happen! We were planning to provide news as a nice surprise for you later this year but as some of you saw on Facebook late last night or early this morning, you beat us to the punch. We will have more info about the program and the special opportunities for this community. So stay tuned. And thanks for all your PB passion – this truly is a return of Pitch Black by Popular DEW-mand!"

It's interesting that this note mentioned that the news has slipped out already. Part of that might have been prompted by one of Pepsi's bottlers, Walton Beverage, of Ferndale, WA. On their "New Products" page they had a listing for the return of both Mountain Dew Pitch Black, as well as 2008's Mountain Dew Supernova. Those listings have since been removed, along with the mockups of the bottle designs, both which used the newer "Mtn Dew" spelling.

Mountain Dew Supernova (2008)

Per our conversation with Pepsi, Pitch Black is slated to be a limited time offering for 8 weeks, starting in May 2011. It's supposed to be the "first of possibly many" re-releases. We could not confirm if Supernova is indeed one of those other options. (Personally, we were never big fans of Supernova, so no big loss!)

That's all we know for now. Stay tuned as more news becomes available!

Given that many bottlers deploy products on their own schedule, you may already be seeing the drinks in your area.

Mountain Dew Throwback (2011, 4th Wave)

Once again, the officially stated plan is an 8-week run of product, which roughly ends sometime in April 2011. The story of Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback is starting to sound like a broken record. The pattern usually goes like this…

Announce drink

Everyone gets excited

Everyone buys drink

Drink goes away

Everyone wonders when drink will return

Drink returns

Repeat as needed

However, this time around, things may be a little different. Take a look at the packaging from the 3rd Wave of Throwbacks (Summer/Fall 2010) when compared to this 4th Wave (Winter 2011). Here is the Pepsi design:

Comparison: Pepsi Throwback (2010, 3rd Wave) vs. Pepsi Throwback (2011, 4th Wave)

Not to be outdone, the Mountain Dew design:

Comparison: Mountain Dew Throwback (2010, 3rd Wave) vs. Throwback (2011, 4th Wave)

Notice anything missing? The references to "Limited Time Only" have been removed from the packaging. Does this mean that Throwback has returned permanently?

Not necessarily, per our conversation with Pepsi's communications folks. This is still slated to be another limited 8-week run of product. However, they told us that a decision will be made very soon whether than run will be extended throughout the year. At this point, that decision has not been finalized (most likely based on sales, etc.). But the change in packaging seems to help them position the drink for a longer stay should that be approved.

What Stays the Same?

This 4th Wave of Throwbacks uses the same formulas as the previous Wave we saw last year. This means that Pepsi is pretty much the same as it always has been, using the denoted reference to "real sugar" (which is actually a combination of cane and beet sugars). The Mountain Dew mix is the same that was introduced during the 2nd Wave (December 2009) and used again during the 3rd Wave (Summer/Fall 2010). Those of you who loved the original Dew Throwback from the 1st Wave are out of luck still.

For the most part, the package design remains the same as it was for the 2nd Wave and 3rd Wave.

What's Different?

If you are looking to tell the difference between an older Wave of Throwbacks vs. this new release, the best way to do so is to look for the reference to "Limited Time Only". This new 4th Wave of Throwback has removed that phrase from the packaging.

Comparison: Pepsi Throwback "Yellow Ribbon" 3rd Wave vs. 4th Wave

In the case of Pepsi Throwback, that means the yellow "ribbon" banner that denoted Throwback is shorter than previously seen.

Comparison: Mountain Dew Throwback "Top Red Band" 3rd Wave vs. 4th Wave

For Mountain Dew Throwback, the red band at the top of the label is now blank.

Comparison: Mountain Dew Throwback "Bottom Red Band" 3rd Wave vs. 4th Wave

We've also noted that the red band at the bottom of Dew's label has decreased in height.

Pepsi Throwback: Calories Per Can

Additionally, to conform to new FDA regulations, you'll note a small badge on the front label areas denoting "X Calories Per Can".

Mountain Dew Throwback: Calories Per Can

This new addition calls out 150 for Pepsi and 170 for Mountain Dew.

Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" follows in the footsteps of Heritage Dr Pepper as another limited edition sugar-sweetened release of the famed drink, this time celebrating the 125th Anniversary.

Well, if you missed out on Heritage Dr Pepper when it was available for a limited time earlier this year, then you are in luck… because Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" is coming.

6 collectible cans of Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar"
(Source: Beverage Industry magazine)

This release is for a limited time to celebrate Dr Pepper's 125th anniversary over the summer (specifically, "through September" or "while supplies last"). As such, they'll have 6 different can designs and a special bottle look. Soda enthusiast forums such as Salute to Soda have been talking about this since April and the news hit mainstream with a recent Associated Press story. The May 2010 issue of Beverage Industry magazine also hinted at the release when covering the history of Dr Pepper, calling the sugar-sweetened product Dr Pepper Heritage.

Bottle: Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar"
(Source: AP)

The folks over at BevNet's forums report that this new Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" will be available in markets where Coke has the bottling rights to Dr Pepper, namely the bottlers of Coca-Cola Enterprises (or CCE).

12-pack package design for Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar"
(Source: AP)

Specifically, it's being produced in bottling plants that can handle "liquid sucrose", i.e. refined sugar which can be a generic description of either cane sugar, beet sugar, or a mixture. Based on what was used in Pepsi Throwback, Mountain Dew Throwback, and Heritage Dr Pepper, our guess would be that beet sugar or cane/beet combo is being used in this new Dr Pepper — it's just cheaper to make that way. As such, this drink most likely will not be Kosher. This also makes the drink substantially different from Dublin Dr Pepper, which is bottled in Dublin, TX, and exclusively uses Imperial Pure Cane Sugar (this is typically considered the best Dr Pepper you can find).

Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" can design
(Source: AP)

The default to Coke-owned bottling sources isn't much different from the release of Heritage Dr Pepper, which was available in locations where Pepsi bottled Dr Pepper (and frankly, made it somewhat harder to find). It's also not confirmed at this time if other bottlers will be involved in the distribution of Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar".

Will it taste the same as Heritage Dr Pepper? We'll have to taste it to find out. Hopefully, the 125th Anniversary edition of Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" will be easier to find for everyone to enjoy.

Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" can design
(Source: AP)

Finally, you know one thing we are looking forward to with this release? Well, of course it's the inclusion of sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). I mean, c'mon, it just tastes better. But beyond that, it's actually the novelty of 6 "collectible" can designs! Here at BevReview, one of the first things that attracted us to the world of drinks was all the different cans that used to be featured "back in the day". I mean, do you remember Pepsi's "Cool Cans"? Nowadays, with the 20 oz. plastic bottle gaining dominance as the preferred way to sell and market drinks, you don't see a much in the way of unique can design, so we applaud the folks at Dr Pepper for making effort here with a tip of the hat to cans!

Here's the official press release from the Dr Pepper Snapple Group:

Dr Pepper Commemorates 125 Years With Collectible Cans Honoring Its Heritage
Limited Edition Cans Available Through September

PLANO, Texas, July 7 /PRNewswire/ — Dr Pepper, the oldest major soft drink in America, continues its 125th Anniversary celebration with the release of Dr Pepper made with real sugar in six collectible cans, inspired by the beloved brand's rich history. Consumers can enjoy the 23 flavors of Dr Pepper in this new packaging beginning in early July through early September.

Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" can design
(Source: AP)

The anniversary cans feature legacy artwork and popular advertising slogans such as "I'm a Pepper" and "10, 2 and 4." In addition, 12-pack cases highlight key moments from the brand's history from its origin at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, TX, in 1885, and its introduction at the 1904 World's Fair, to the widely popular "I'm a Pepper" advertisements first released in 1977.

"Dr Pepper has evolved for 125 years, thanks to its unique flavor and a fan base that continues to grow," said Dave Fleming, director of marketing for Dr Pepper. "We're honoring the brand's legacy and thanking our fans everywhere for their support by offering something special – commemorative cans depicting some of the most memorable moments in our history."

Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" can design
(Source: AP)

Dr Pepper kicked off its anniversary year on the symbolic date of January 25, 2010, when Dr Pepper ad icons David Naughton and Gene Simmons rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange. Continuing the celebration, the brand launched its Dr Pepper Cherry flavor during Super Bowl XLIV. The ad spot featured Gene Simmons as "Doctor Love" joined by Paul Stanley and their KISS band mates as well as tribute band MiniKISS.

Dr Pepper 125th Anniversary product is available in 12-oz cans with six collectible can designs and 20-oz bottles at retailers nationwide, until supplies last.

Also, if you missed it, here's the AP's take on the new release:

Dr Pepper orders sugar for 125th anniversary
by Emily Fredrix (AP)

NEW YORK — Dr Pepper is prescribing some sugar this summer in honor of its 125th anniversary, the latest in a series of moves by soda makers to temporarily swap out high fructose corn syrup.

The spicy soda made by Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. is rolling out Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" this weekend through early September.

Cans and bottles will feature old logos in the company's deep red, and colorful designs with lions and bright swirls of color harkening back to the 60s. Popular phrases such as "I'm a Pepper" also appear.

Video: Tribute video to Dr Pepper's anniversary [No Audio]
(Source: YouTube)

There are six different can designs. The company wanted to bring back the sugar version to help highlight its past, which dates to the creation of Dr Pepper by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas, in 1885.

Dr Pepper declined to say if it will try out sugar in other brands such as Canada Dry, 7-Up and A&W Root Beer.

Manufacturers are testing sugar drinks as people's appetite for them increases, as some become concerned about high fructose corn syrup. Though they're nutritionally almost identical and equally caloric, some consumers believe corn syrup is less healthy than sugar.

They're also racing to come up with natural, no-calorie sweeteners and reformulate their beverages, though they haven't been able to apply that to major soft drink brands yet.

Last summer, rival PepsiCo Inc. launched real sugar versions of Pepsi and Mountain Dew, calling them "Throwback" and using old packaging designs. Pepsi Throwback was so popular the company brought it back for a brief time in the winter. It declined to say what the drink's prospects are for the future.

Coca-Cola Co. offers a kosher version of Coke that uses sugar (look for bottles with yellow caps), often available around Passover. Mexican-made Coca-Cola, which also uses real sugar, can sometimes be found in the U.S., and fans pay a higher price for it. One Dr Pepper bottler, Dublin Dr Pepper, has been making the soft drink with sugar since 1891, in the drink's home state of Texas.

More could be coming. PepsiCo's Sierra Mist line will now be reformulating into a sugar-sweetened version called "Sierra Mist Natural," according to a report Thursday by trade publication Beverage Digest. PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., did not return messages seeking comment.

The industry switched to high fructose corn syrup in the 1970s as a cheaper alternative to sugar, said Gerry Khermouch, editor of Beverage Business Insights.

There seems to be growing demand for it, as evidenced by Pepsi's success with Throwback, even the second time around, he said. But drink makers are also wary of sending a message that there's anything wrong with high fructose corn syrup.

"In some ways their worst nightmare is that this thing sells through the roof, because then that's telling them something about how consumers feel about their product," he said.

Per Pepsi's customer support, this is now being officially confirmed:

We're thrilled to announce that thanks to the overwhelmingly positive feedback we've received, Throwback is coming back! You'll begin to see these beverages in stores starting July 31st for five weeks or while supplies last. They'll have the same real sugar formula and retro graphics that you liked so much the last go-round.

5 weeks? Seems like these runs are getting shorter and shorter, doesn't it. For those who like to mark their calendars, those dates are around July 31-September 4.

As we get more details, we'll be sure to share them. It's back for a third time, Throwback fans! Special thanks to BevReview fan Rick Powell for passing along the information.
